I'm addicted to Tums. Sometimes when I lay down to go to sleep I get a

burning in my throat. So I pop a couple of Tums.

Does anyone have a natural way to deal with this? It's been going on

for a year or so.

Thanks

Thea

This is pretty much how I started out. I was taking care of my mom full time, and without going into detail as to why, but it was very stressful. I thought I was having mild acid indigestion which the Tums took care of. Things got worse and in a few years I ended up on Prevacid. I was either on Prevacid, Nexium, or Priolosec. After close to 5 years I had 3 very serious ulcers and my esophagus was very injured by all the stomach acid. I'm in the process of healing from all of this now as I write this. It sounds as though you are still in the beginning mild stage. It's possible you have an h. pylori bacterial infection, which causes ulcers. Mastic Gum has proven to kill this bacteria, and I used that along with Olive Leaf Extract. DGL Licorice also fights the bacteria and helps to sooth and heal the stomach and esophagus. I took a lot of other things too, but like I said, mine became so severe by the time I realized what was going on. Thea

dilute 2 teaspoons of raw (health food store brands, make sure it's

RAW) apple cider vinegar in a glass of water sipped on with meals or

at least once a day. Raw apple cider vinegar is not acidic in the

body, it normalizes or balances acidity and alkalinity. Do a search on

it. You'll have to muster the faith to try it once to see for

yourself, that you'll like it! :)

Drinking Kefir helps a lot for this too. I use to have reflux really bad and was on meds for it. They did not help much. So I tried kefir. After a good cleaning out ;-) the reflux went away! The first time in many years I could sleep in peace.

There are only two things that cause acid reflux for me now, 1, I go several days without drinking kefir, 2, once in a while just before my menstrual. Then it is just a matter of drinking some kefir and all is better.

I did try the apple cider vinegar and it helped some but the kefir was really the trick for me. But then again, I use a lot of the ACV in my foods, I just am a huge vinegar fan. Crave it at times too. Balsamic vinegar is wonderful on steak. I use it in place of ketchup or A-1.

Thea,

try getting some powdered slippery elm, (all health food stores have it in capsules) open the capsules and put 1 teaspoon in a few tablespoons of organic whole milk yogurt (if you can get it) and a sprinkle of cinnamon, take this at least 3 times a day and get off that awful TUMS.

Actually, the indigestion can be from either too much acid or to little acid. A test that works to determine if the indigestion is caused by excess acid is to drink a full glass of water when you have your problem. If the water "cures" your indigestion for even a little while you have too much acid production which can be aggrivated by diet, stress, and eating habits (time of day etc.) If the water does not do anything to change your condition bitters before each meal will help increase acid production, which should decrease the problem (if you eat with a low initial amount of acid the body goes into hyperdive trying to compensate and you get too much acid). Try this and let us know which it is and then I will give you some suggestions.

I am not the initial person who requested this information but I have the same problem.

The water DOES help me some, apple cider vinegar does not.

What should I take? Bitters? What is that?

Thanks,

Brenda

So many solutions... which is great! This group is wonderful.

I like the slippery elm idea, I'm going to write down all the alternatives and start with one.

Thanks DavidTB for your mom's story. I worry about it getting out of hand.

Want to catch this thing before it gets bad.

Thanks all!

Thea

I also take Slippery Elm, and Marshmellow. Right now the problem seems to be my esophagus and entrance to the stomach. Reading a post here I'm on a soft diet for awhile. It's getting better, I just want it all healed at this point. Also try the DGL licorice, I don't chew them, I let them dissolve in my mouth so it coats the esophagus on the way down. I wish I knew all the benefits of Omega 3s when my mom was still alive, I can't help but wonder if that wouldn't have made a difference.Thea <mammamorta wrote: So many solutions... which is great! Bonnie,

Thanks for the information about slippery elm. I'd tried making an

infusion, but I had powdered my slippery elm. I ended up with a

gelatenous goop that simply wouldn't strain.

I'll definitely try the powdered in yogurt (I finally have a source

for organic whole milk yogurt), and I'm going to try the cold

infusion the way you instructed.

Thanks.

Terri
