Guest guest
So I live in California, and we can't buy the higher proof alcohols for making tinctures such as Everclear. What is my best option? I'm currently using 40 proof vodka as I haven't been able to find anything else... Guest guest
Look for Smirnoff 100 proof alcohol (blue label) and use it straight. Also, most tinctures don't need to be made in 100 proof alcohol, if you look at the menstrums used for most tinctures they vary from 40-100 proof. Guest guest
You want 80 Proof for softer plant parts and 100 Proof for the tougher roots and barks. I never use under 80 proof and hardly ever use over 100 Proof. To keep things simple, and as a general rule of thumb I usually use 100 Proof for everything. I get my alcohol in 200 Proof 5 gallon containers and cut it 50-50 with distilled water to get my 100 Proof. You should be able to get 100 proof Smirnoff Vodka in California. This will be as good as anything I have. Guest guest
As I posted earlier, I usually use 100 Proof for just about everything. Now, this is overkill for leafy herbs and flowers, but absolutely perfect for roots and barks. However, it won't detract from the leafy tinctures, and only makes the extra alcohol content somewhat redundant, but on the other hand will contribute to assimilation. Soooooooooooo, I stick with the 100 Proof. I'd never use less than 80 Proof regardless. I want all the goodies. Less than 80 and your "pulling" properties are lessened, and it may take longer to make your tincture. In Health and Love, Doc PS. I never use Glyserine as a menstruum.
