Guest guest
Dear runninghome, You wrote- I'm not sure putting hydrogen peroxide on the spot is a good idea. It might be an infection, like ring worm, which can be passed to humans. As the puppy is getting it as well, it may be passable. I think you need the right sort of skin cream to clear it up. Could be the soap you washed them in. I did stop hydrogen peroxide, but all I could think of to use was raw honey. I used that for 2 days but no change, then I used colloidal silver water. I do need to get to the store. The puppy is not getting it - nor are our 2 dogs - so it is not passable. I just didn't want the puppy to get the treatment/ointment whatever it will be on her eyes- or lick it off the mom, etc. So I wanted something safe for her. We do not wash the dogs at all so it was not soap causing it. Where I live there is no college of Vetrinary or Herbal courses for animals or anything of that sort at all. That is nice that they do offer help to folks and let the students do the work though. I had never heard or thought of that! I will look for an ointment at the stores - I just did not want the puppy to get it in his mouth as he frequently bites the mothers neck in play.... I had hoped for something else. Guest guest
How about dabbing some tea tree oil on the spots? Sometimes using it full strength on a really raw area might burn, so you can delute it with some olive oil. I believe the store bought stuff for hot spots is Sulfadene or Sulfadex? Another thing that I have to help my critters is from the feed store in the horse section. The company that makes it is " Schreiner's " , and it is called " Herbal Solution " . The ingredients are Aloe Vera, Myrrh, Goldenseal, Comfrey, Cayenne, and Elder in a light Isopropyl Alcohol base. It really helped a cut on my dog's ear that just would not heal. Take care, Teresa-
Guest guest
Hi, Well this morning I decided to take the dog to the vet. Yesterday we noticed she also had an itchy ear, which I also don't know how to treat, so I took her in. He did not really tell me why she has that itchy skin spot, just called it dermatitis. He shaved it and gave her a cortisone shot for the itching. Then he gave me an ointment to put on it and in her ears called Animax. He said she had an ear infection. He said retrievers like water and sometimes they get it in their ears and that can cause that. `He said she might have some allergy issues which could be anything of hundreds of things, from dust mites to food? So he did not tell me what to do to prevent anything, just how to treat this problems she has now. He also gave me 2 pills for her. I cannot read his writing but one is chlorphen... ? for itching and the other is sulfa..something. She is a good dog and we felt very sorry for her itchiness so I am glad its being taken care of ...even though its prescriptions. I thought about Tea Tree Oil but I was afraid to use it because we have 7 cats and its very toxic to cats. This is good to know - The company that makes it is "Schreiner's", andit is called "Herbal Solution". The ingredients are Aloe Vera, Myrrh,Goldenseal, Comfrey, Cayenne, and Elder in a light Isopropyl Alcoholbase. I am going to look for it. I wanted to put goldenseal on it at first but I was afraid to because it said not to use if nursing or pregnant and her puppy does still nurse a little. I did not know if putting it on the skin would be the same...I was just so scared to harm these dogs since they aren't mine. Well- I wouldn't want to harm my dogs either! ) Thanks, Brenda
Guest guest
Brenda, The Chlorephen... is actually Chlortrimaton which you can buy in the drug store (people section) for allergies. And if the other is a sulfa drug, you can give fresh garlic. Debra
Guest guest
Re: Golden-Seal...I have never read in 30 years that GoldenSeal could be toxic to infants; but one never knowns... However; I sincerley doubt that Golden-Seal would be Toxic to a dog or cat just by putting it on the skin. I have never heard of any adverse with GoldenSeal either internally or topically. In fact; from what I know: GoldenSeal is one of the safest Herbs we have...and is valued for its safety and purifying nature. The Caynenne in it would be far more " risky " than the " Golden-Seal " , Will research GoldenSeal.
