I have a thyroid question Dr. S

This is what worked for me. For me, I found that my sluggish thyroid was not a

product of any thyroid problems, but hormonal imbalence. That is really common

after childbirth, and especially with all the hormones they put in foods. I

quit all non organic milk and meat and had a ton more energy instantly. You

can't do any of the cleanses while nursing, but that is something you can do.

I do not fully understand how all the hormones tie together, but estrogen is

tied into your thyroid, or rather the xeno estrogens in non organic food can

slow your thyroid. It is an easy first step.

stephany ,

this might not be along the lines of this group ... i dont know , BUT there is a herbal supplement out there called " thyromax " . you might want to google it . anyhow ... to make a long story short , while in massage school , i read , that the thyroid controls the medial nerve , which is responsible for carpal tunnel syndrome . for many years prior to finding this bit of info , i felt like my thyroid was not working properl;y . but the dr checked and always said , it was fine .

well , according to my good friend charly [ he owned a healthfoodstore and was well educated ] the guidelines for the thyroid that the drs use are way of the rocker . and that a easy test [ taking your temperature every morning ] is much more accurate .

anyhow , mycarpal tunnel was sooo awful in both arms , that he wanted to operate on both arms right away ! i dont like even touching this area of my body , its soo sensetive -- much less operate . after i started taking the thyromax -- a few days later -- i realised that my arms where NOT HURTING !! since i had noticed that eating certain things made the carpal worse ... i checked what i had eaten and the only difference i could come up with was the thyromax . now , if i dont take it for a while , maybe because i forgot or ran out of the pills , the carpal tunnel will remind me by starting to hurt after about a week or so of not taking it . but it only takes taking the pills for 3 days for the pain to go away .

soo ,i know , my thyroid is not working properly --no matter what the dr wants to convince me otherwise .

thyromax will work well . but if you have the blues , you might want to check your hormones and think about doing some natural hormone replacement , as in estroven . soymilk or whatever else is out there . [ have a story along those lines too ... ]

hope this helps

Thanks Ramona,

But I am sure that mine is a thyroid problem.

I guess that I should have talked a bit about our diet because I

have ruled that out as a cause. I do not drink milk at all because

of those types of issues causing me to have eczema. The rest of my

family does drink organic milk. We are quazi vegetarians, we

generally only eat fish. I will on occasion have meat but we buy

our meat from our local health food store when we do. Here in Iowa,

there are all sorts of little farms that raise organic meat so it is

pretty easy to come by. We eat organic foods for the most part.

Our vegetables and the like we grow in our garden and my flour,

beans, rice, oatmeal, cheese, etc. we buy in bulk from a local

natural foods buying club. We don't don't processed foods or food

dyes at all because of the reaction that my four-year-old son has to

them. I even make my own bread and garden burgers here at home.

A typical day's food for me generally includes a bowl of oatmeal in

the morning. I make it with unsweeteened apple juice and cinnamon.

The for lunch we usually have brown rice in some form. Sometimes I

mix in steamed vegetables, sometimes we have beans and rice. Today I

think I am going to make a lentil and rice soup. Dinners vary and

may include pastas but we buy organic, whole grain pasta or rice

noodles. In an average day I have no sugar, I haven't had a soda

in months. I will drink a cup of tea or coffee but not on a regular

basis. I usually just drink water and I love spicy vegetable

juice.

I am only going into this in such detail because I feel I have a

fairly decent diet and it is very frustrating for me that I don't

feel better. Sorry for such a lengthy post.

Thanks gab,

I will look into both of these things. I have been struggling with

PPD but I have just looked at this as a symptom of the

hypothyroidism.

Hi Stephany,

You certainly do have an excellent diet.

Just one remark, which I learned about from Doc, and this concerns Enzyme Inhibitors. You can read his articles on file on the group's sit, called The Hidden Influence, and the articles on sprouting.

Stephany,Have you been diagnosed by anyone?? I'm asking because even a year post-partum, especially during BF your hormone levels may not be "normal". If I am correct, during lactation the hormone levels can mimic a sluggish thyroid. Doc, does this have anything to do with the prolactn levels in the mother's body."I would not try anything related to getting your thyroid without talking to Doc or a board certified lactation consultan (IBCLC) first, since the thyroid plays a significant role in lactationAnother issue could be postpartum thyroiditis in which the thyroid becomes inflamed. It has two phases - hyperthyroid then hypothyroid - the later showing up 3 - 9 month post-partum. Again, I consult with Doc or an IBCLC.Tammi U.Stephany <stephanyhoffelt wrote: Thanks

The ND I saw recommended doing an iodine patch test in which I put

iodine on my skin and watched to see if it was absorbed which it was

very quickly. He recommended Kelp tablets from GNC which I have been

taking with not many results.

I have talked to a lactation consultant whose advice was to go to a

conventional MD and get put on syntroid.

I am aware that this could all be due to breastfeeding. I have

afterall been breastfeeding for over four years now and I am sure that

is taking its toll on my body.

Many Doctors do not realize that the lab values for thyroid levels have been lowered. So now a TSH over 3 is considered hypothyroid. The value use to be over 5. Plus many people do better being on the low side of normal than on the higher side.

Since I have no thyroid I now take synthroid but replace some of it with a product called " Raw Thyroid". I got it from "Wilderness Family Naturals", Finland, MN, although I have seen it else where. This is raw bovine thyroid. I feel much better taking this verses taking just synthroid alone. Personally if I could I would only take natural raw thyroid instead of the synthetic thyroid replacement.

the temperature test is really a good way to see if you are hypothyroid. Best to take it first thing in the morning before you get out of bed. Should be above 98 and less than 99.

Stephany,

I live in Iowa, and I have been unable to find any place that sells organic

meat. I've switched nearly everything else to organic and rarely eat meat

because I can't find it organic. I live in Southwest Iowa and have done all

kinds of searches. I can't find a good source that's close enough to make it

feasible. My local CSA farm is wonderful for fruits and veggies, but they don't

do any kind of animal products. If you know of any places near me that sell

organic meat, please let me know. You can email me off-list with the

information if you like.

Wow. Basal temp should be above 98? When I was trying to get pregnant with my second child, I did basal temp monitoring for about six months. Mine never, ever reached 98. Usually it was in the upper 96 to low 97. Hmmmm...

Terri,

You can go to blackwing.com and they will ship direct to you and their meat

is wonderful. I love it because I can get wild, organic meat, like bison

and venison.

My body temp is stuck at 96.8° F.

Ever since I went thru andropause my internal thermostat has been on high but my temp is always low.

Is there a herbal for this malady?.

I am so hot I cannot cuddle and spoon anymore and I miss that closeness.

They have a search box where you can look by city/zip code or state...

Might be worth a try if you haven't checked it yet?

Bob,

Are you certain that it's due to andropause? The reason I ask is that my boss

was always hot. Winter and summer, he had an air conditioner running in his

office. We all used to put a sweater or jacket on when we went in there.

Recently, he was diagnosed with diabetes and has been taking medication and

changing diet. Now that he blood sugar is lower, he's not quite so hot all the

time.

Just something to think about.

Hi Terri!

My temp problem started after my andropause. But I did have complications as I also had Heat Stroke for the third time. I am also overweight about 60 pounds because I do not get enough exercise.

There's diabetes in my family so I keep a watchful eye on my blood sugar.

Dear Stephany,

I'd recommend whole heartedly that you get on the Total Nutrition Recipe as in the Files. The Iodine in the Kelp will help to stimulate your Thyroid. The Astragalus in the formula will help to not only improve your metabolism, but will assist in balancing hormones and building the immune system as well.

Dear Stephany,

You want to stay away from GNC. It is main line pharmaceutical and what they sell is crap.

Get yourself on the Body Balance + and the Total Nutrition and this alone will help tremendously.

Breast feeding takes a lot out of you. If your diet is deficient nutritionally, you're being starved.

The two formulae above will go a long ways to handling that.
