Guest guest
Hi, Everyone, I just joined today and can tell already this will be one interesting and informative group to be in. I'm a retired RN, long interested in natural living and healing and now have the good fortune to be an active, healthy and very alive 70 year old. I live in a rural area of Nebraska and enjoy a very simple life today, after spending most of it in the " big city " . I do both flower and veggie gardening in the summer and travel a bit in the winter. I read all the posts about cholesterol and want to put in my 2 cents worth. While there are many causes for elevated cholesterol an underactive thyroid is perhaps the most overlooked and this association is well documented. I would encourage anyone with high cholesterol to ask to have a thyroid function blood test. My own cholesterol was elevated a few years ago and I now realize it was due solely to an underactive thyroid. I did bring it down at that time with oat bran and beta sitosterol (plant stanols) and perhaps a year later went on thyroid medication. Earlier this year my cholesterol was again elevated....and my thyroid dosage was insufficient had to be increased. I brought it down again, this time with oat bran and red yeast rice (which is a natural statin.) My cholesterol is now back to normal. I realize that thyroid hormone supplementation is not considered " natural " and there may be other ways to stimulate a sluggish thyroid other than with medication. Nevertheless, getting to the root cause of the high cholesterol is invaluable in formulating a plan of action to combat it and bring it to a normal range and ruling out a sluggish thyroid is a good place to start. Hopes this helps someone. Mitsy in Nebraska > Does anyone know which herb is good for lowering cholesterol?..
