My boys both have bad coughs and runny noses. I am having the same

issue that I always do when they are sick. My naturopath tells me to

make an infusion of garlic and goldenseal but it is next to impossible

to get my kids to drink it.

I have tried goldenseal tincture in organic cranberry juice to try to

hide the flavor but I am just not having much luck.

My mom suggesting holding them down and squirting it down their

throats but I am just hoping someone out there may have a better

suggestion. They still spit and sputter and it is difficult to tell if

they have taken in enough of the herbs.

Thanks in advance,

Stephany

Have you tried adding Honey to the mix. Not only does it make anyting tastier, it contributes its own wonderful healing properties and makes it easier on the stomach. . Steph,

My kids are 5 and 7. They will both now take herb capsules for me. I just have them prime their mouths with liquid, then slip in the capsule and 'look down'. The capsule floats up and they can swallow it with no effort.

When giving tincture, I tell them it tastes nasty, so they know I'm not trying to trick them, and have them standing ready w/some juice to wash it down.

I give - vitamin c caps, echinacea/golden seal caps/panex ginseng etc (not all at the same time of course, just what I think they need) Then I try to give some pm-cold care tea and a hot bath before bed.

took a 20 week chinese patent herb course from Jake

Fratkin, DOM,

http://www.drjakefratkin.com/articles.htm a year or so

back. He suggested getting a pediatric medicine

dosing syringe, making a slurry of the herbs (in our

class's case, ground up chinese patent pills), and

squirting it down their throat--holding them down if

necessary. Sorry, I know it sounds unpleasent, but

that seems to be how it goes sometimes. Maybe after

the first few times, they will realize you mean

business and just take it.

Hi Stephany,

I use Doc's Total Tonic with my son, and just put it in his food and call it a garlic sauce - he loves it LOL Of course this only works with foods that taste nice with garlic on them, such as pasta, rice, chicken etc..

love

I don't know what it tastes like, but garlic is good in mashed potatoes. What

if you mixed the dose in with a serving of mashed potatoes? But don't tell

them...just give it to them.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I decided after a lot of reading

to change the herbs I am giving him internally. I had him drink a

bit of cranberry juice with some oregano oil and ginger in it. I

left the garlic and the goldenseal for the ear oil that I make for

them. I can barely stomach the goldenseal, it is just awful.

Debra, my boys are one and four. (I guess that would have been

useful knowledge to include in the original post--duh, Stephany) I

did work with my four-year-old a little with the capsules. He is

still trying but it is a good technique. My daughters said that it

helped them.

Carol, Honey is a great idea. I do make a cough syrup with garlic

and honey sometimes but I didn't think to add any to the juice.

Thanks again,

Stephany
