drug companies. I think that we should all be concerned and take

I recently wrote to tell you about the potential public health threat

posed by our government's lack of preparedness for an avian flu

pandemic. Since then, President Bush has announced a plan that still

needs significant work - but in the meantime, there's a stealth deal

in Congress that could put our public health at risk for pure drug

industry profit on flu vaccines. Take action:

Here's what's happening: supporters of vaccine manufacturers are

trying to slip a proposal through Congress that would provide

unprecedented immunity to drug companies for any harm caused by deadly

or defective drugs and vaccines - all under the pretense that it is

needed to increase vaccine supplies.

 

Instead of calming the public's fears of bird flu, Congress and the

drug industry are trying to capitalize on it, and they're willing to

trade in your rights to increase the already record-breaking profits

of the pharmaceutical companies. If this proposal passes, victims of

faulty or dangerous drugs will be left with no recourse, even in cases

of gross negligence on the part of the pharmaceutical companies who

produce the drugs. Please prevent this proposal from passing Congress.

 

The drug industry and its friends will tell you that litigation has

caused a crisis in vaccine production - but that's just not true! Over

the last two decades there have been fewer than a dozen reported flu

vaccine lawsuits and experts agree that liability concerns are not

affecting vaccine production.

 

In fact, limiting the liability of drug companies could actually make

a pandemic worse by discouraging Americans from getting vaccinated.

When Congress passed similar smallpox vaccine legislation, many first

responders simply refused to get vaccinated.

 

While we certainly need to increase the amount of vaccine and drugs

available we can not allow Congress to use public fear of bird flu as

an excuse to allow unsafe and even dangerous drugs to be administered

to patients. Act now!
