Herbal Remedies - Re: Soaking nuts

I too have a silly question. Why should I soak nuts before eating them? And, how long do I soak them for? Cold water, or warm?

What does soaking do?

It breaks the enzyme inhibitors so then your body can assimilate and utilize them, you should also do this to grain as well. Something I just learned some nuts takes 12 - 24 hours of roasting . Sunflower and pumpkin seeds- 12 hours Cashews and Macadamia- 24 hours If it taste funny, it hasn't been roasted long enough. Gina Debra Savage <gdwmn65 wrote: I too have a silly question. Are we suppose to "soak" them or "roast" them ?? I"m confused now..............and I suppose we're talkin' about "green" nuts ?

Is soaking and roasting done with the shells on or off of Sunflower seeds? Pumpkin seeds?

This is a quote from " Nourishing Traditions " regarding the soaking of nuts:

" Nuts are an extremely nutritious food if prepared properly. . . .the

habits of traditional peoples should serve as a guide. They understood

instinctively that nuts are best soaked or partially sprouted before

eaten. This is because nuts contain numerous enzyme inhibitors that

can put a real strain on the digestive mechanism if consumed in

excess. Nuts are easier to digest, and their nutrients more readily

available, if they are first soaked in salt water overnight, the dried

in a warm oven. (You may also use a dehydrator.) This method imitates

the Aztec practice of soaking pumpkin or squash seeds in brine and

then letting them dry in the sun before eating them whole or grinding

them into meal. Salt in soaking water activates enzymes that

neutralize enzyme inhibitors. "

I don't know about using salt water.

I've never had a problem sprouting in fresh water = more natural and what would happen in nature.
