Guest guest
I'm sorry I didn't see your post earlier. I don't know if this answer is too late to help you. I'm no authority, and I can't give you a magic number for how high a fever can go and be safe. I do know that 102.5 is not critical. When my children were little, I judged a lot by how they acted as well as the actual number. Guest guest
I just saw your post, so this may be late to help you. I usally monitor a fever, but let it run up to about 105 in kids before intervening. I'm not comfortable letting it go high than 105. Guest guest
Hi, Debra: > " chickfarmer1 " <gdwmn65 > Does anyone know how high I can let my childs fever go before > intervening? A fever is actually a good sign that the body is fighting off the infection. I know back in the " olden " days, my mom told me that they would swaddle us in blankets to make us " sweat it out " . They say there is a risk of febrile seizures when the temperature gets too high (+104), but many books with a holistic slant suggest that the body will " break " the fever before that happens. Even if a febrile seizure happens, they are benign. Once they pass, the child is fine. Very high fevers (+106) can cause harm but, again, holistic experts suggest that the brain keeps body temperature at or below 104 so, in most cases, you do not need to be afraid that the fever is going to rise above that point. My daughter is 3.5 years old, and I've let her fevers get up to 103.5 without intervention. Yes, she is usually very uncomfortable at that point (sweaty, limp) but she doesn't usually stay at that temp very long before it " breaks " . My niece always had temps of 104 whenever she was sick, even if it was from only teething. Most important, make sure your daughter drinks lots of fluids because dehydration can drive up a fever. Hope this helps, Darlene
Guest guest
Catnip enemas are excellent for fevers, although with a five year old can be difficult to do. Guest guest
I had a child who whenever he got sick regularily ran fevers from 102-105. There were times when his fever shot immediately to 105.5 Ice baths. The reason to bring the fever down from dangerously high levels is to avoid convulsions. I found that initially bathing in "warm" and gradually bringing the water to cooler if not cold temps so as not to initially shock the system works well. Ideally, the fever should be allowd to maintain low grade levels to fight the pathogens. If the core fever is really high, the cool to cold baths are well tolerated, if not welcomed by the child. Guest guest
Dear Deb, This is a bit of an arbitrary thing. I've had adults and kids temps go as high as 105 with no brain damage or any other kind of adverse effect whatsoever. The key is to keep them well hydrated with organic herb teas. The diaphoretic teas are the best which includes Ginger. A thumb size piece of Ginger which is diced up and brought to a boil and let simmer for 15 minutes is the best and can even break a fever. Yarrow tea is probably the very best for this. This answer of mine is a little behind so by now you've probably worked the whole thing out. Let me know how it went. :-) In Health and Love, Doc Doc Shillington727-447-5282Doc - chickfarmer1 herbal remedies Wednesday, November 23, 2005 8:32 PM Herbal Remedies - Child w/fever Hello,Does anyone know how high I can let my childs fever go before intervening? She's 5, woke up around 5:30am saying she felt like she was going to vomit (and she had a fever), and promptly did - but her tummy was empty so it was really just that awful heaving. That lasted till around noon. At that time I got her into the tub w/epsom salts and some fresh from the yard lavender. Oh, she also through the morning took 2 black walnut capsules and some black walnut tincture and 1000 mg of vitamin C. But of course now that its evening and after her 2nd epsom salt bath and time for bed her temp is 102.5. I just gave her 1 black walnut capsule (gagging it down), then one full dropper of black walnut tincture. I put her to bed with an ice pack.I'd appreciate any comments about what I have done, what I should do next, and how high I can let that temp go, then what to do after that.Debra
