Guest guest
HI Everyone, I have a situation with my cat. She is around 7 years old, and every year she gets an allergy, we have always, assumed that is was fleas, the vet said, so we buy her an advantage, and apply it to her and the itching goes away. She usually gets alot of scabs all over to. Well this year about 6 weeks ago, I noticed her itching, and got a closer look and she was a mess scabs twice as bad, everywhere. So off to the vet we go. They give her an allergy shot and put her on an antibiotic. Well it worked for about 2 weeks, and she started itching again, so back to the vet. They give her steriods and another anitbiotic, that worked for about a week. So called the vet they say she needs another allergy shot, so back to the vet they give her the shot and she was good for about a day, she is itching again, I don't know what to do for her. I had swithed her food about 8 weeks ago because one of my other cats, was throwing it up everytime she ate it. So I did switch back to the old food. I was wondering if any of you had any ideas. This is the place I should have started to begin with. Thanks, Sherry
Guest guest
Hi, Sherry & all: > " Sherry " <djlmusky-man > I have a situation with my cat. > She is around 7 years old, and every year she gets an allergy, we have > always, assumed > that is was fleas, the vet said, so we buy her an advantage, and apply it to > her and the > itching goes away. Your cat could be allergic to something in the food. What are you feeding her? She should be preferably on a homemade diet. If that's not feasible, a premium food with no preservatives and no by-products. Try a grain-free diet, because lots of cat foods have " fillers " like corn that cause skin-type reactions in cats. Advantage is bad, so you want to stay away from that. I belong to a wonderful holistic cat health group. I'm not sure what the rules are for this group about promoting other groups, so if you can to know the name, you can email me off-list. Hope your kitty is feeling better soon! Guest guest
I've looking forward to the suggestions for this problem. I have two cats and possibly three that has the same problem. I hesitate to take them to the vet because of their chemical treatments. I'm hoping someone will suggest some natural alternatives to try. Guest guest
My this seems to be a big problem for alot of people's cats, I wonder! Mine is miserable too, all she does in itch, and itch. And I am tired of high vet bills that aren't helping, and just making things worse...And I know the steriods aren't any good for her.... We have had labs before that had skin problems, and we had to put them on Lamb and rice food, and the itching went away, maybe I will look for some of that for the cat.....There has to be some herbs to give her to help........ Guest guest
Cats are true carnivores so they don't produce the enzymes necessary to properly break down grains. You need to find a grain-free food or feed raw (google BARF). I feed my cats a food called EVO which is made by Innova ( http://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=inn-home ) It is totally grain free and a very high quality food. Guest guest
Sherry, This is my plan to try to conquer this problem. I have two cats that is suffering and possibly a third one. I switched their dry food to a holistic brand. I'm going to start adding water to their dry food - let it soak in water or broth before feeding. I'm also going to add some oil to this food. I'll rotate oils like fish oil, olive oil, and coconut oil. I'm also going to start offering some cooked meats and may even offer some raw meats to them. I'm planning to do the oil bath today with at least one of them. My cats won't enjoy this procedure; but if it will help, I'll do it. I think it will help sooth their itching skin, but I think the key to healing will be the diet. I'll let you know how the bath goes. Irene imclark - Sherry herbal remedies 11/13/2005 10:24:36 PM RE: Herbal Remedies - cat Thanks Julie, I have thought about giving her oil to swallow, from the inside out, I though maybe she had dry skin. MY cat hates water though, and it is a reall struggle to get her in water, but I am willing to try... Thanks, Sherry
Guest guest
Greetings, I wouldn't make so many changes all at once or when you find the 'cure' you won't know what change in their diet helped. Just my opinion, but I would take it slow and make one change every 3-4 days or every week and see what happens. I know you want your cats to feel better immediately, but just take it slow. I purchased some shampoo yesterday for mites. I'm going to use it today. Again, thanks for your suggestion. Irene imclark
Guest guest
Tim, Thanks for the advice. Ok, here's what I'll do this week. I've already given two of them the oil bath. In a few minutes, I'll wash them probably with some mild natural shampoo and warm water. I started them on a new dry holistic food yesterday. I'll only add water/broth to it for a week or so. This is to help them get more water internally. After a week or two, I'll evaluate the situation and add more to their diet. BTW, one cat enjoyed the oil bath. The other cat did a lot of growling but remained still. I put them into the bath tub and actually used almost a cup of warmed coconut oil on each. I have some oily cats now. Of course, they are grooming now. I've used coconut oil on their food in the past for hair balls. It works wonders! Needless, to say, these two won't have any problems with hair balls for a while!
