Guest guest
Hello! I wanted to introduce myself as well. I am just starting to learn about natural/alternative medicines compared to traditional pharmaceuticals. I am only 33 but already have been told by my doctor that I have to take Allegra every day for the rest of my life. I have an appt with an herbalist/nutritionist next week and am going to look into some other options besides my life long commitment to Allegra. It has been about a month since I have taken the Allegra though because my insurance is fighting me on it, they want me to take OTC Claritin stead. So....in the meantime, a friend recommended I start taking MSM (which I never have before). So I bought some 2 days ago and started taking 2,000mg per day (2 pills a day). The first day I noticed a light headache developed and I had difficulty concentrating. The second day (yesterday), I developed a very sore throat, stiff painful neck, and a fever of about 100! I couldn't sleep last night due to the fever and sore throat, so I took some Nyquil, which worked great. Now this morning the fever is completely gone, the sore throat is almost gone, as is all the stiffness and pain. I am left with a strange lightheaded feeling and still have trouble concentrating. Do you think maybe I was just getting sick anyway? Or could my fever and headache been related to the MSM? I am a little nervous to take more this morning. I think I will hold off taking more MSM until I do more research first. Could this be some sort of detox from the MSM? Or a bad reaction to it? Or not related to it at all? In all my research about it I never found any bad side effects besides some gastrointestinal discomfort, which I don't have. Hmmmm, I wonder what I should do next? Take some more, wait a few days, take less? I really do want to give the MSM a try and am hoping my fever as just related to a cold and nothing more. I am going to see an "Herbalist" this weekend. She wants to put me on Nettle Leaf for my allergies, so I researched it last night (I am not letting her put me on anything until I know more about each specific herb) and it seems safe enough. I also read that drinking apple cider vinegar (1/8 cup per day) would help greatly with pollen allergies. Has anyone ever tried that? I am also going to try and look into what long term effects Allegra may have. Unless I find anther solution I will be Allegra dependent for the rest of my life, and my daughter takes Claritin every day. While they get rid of our allergy symptoms, I wonder what else they are doing? On teh plus side, since I started taking the MSM my tight itchy lungs have cleared up and my allergies do feel much better (I just have pollen/seasonal allergies). Sorry to ramble on so long. I was just so surprised by that fever last night it got a little scared. I don't want to hurt myself with something I buy at the HFS. I do have some other health issues I am dealing with, but I want to find out more about this MSM first before I move on to other things. Thanks for any thoughts anyone might have on MSM, fevers, etc. Leslie Freeland PS: I will go through the archives today also, looking for anything on MSM. Guest guest
A fever will never hurt you as long as you are drinking plenty of purified water. Also herbal teas made from purified water are great. But make sure you concentrate on plenty of water. This goes for all people no matter what age, even small children and infants. If you take some kind of drug to stop the fever you are doing your body harm. This is a definite fact. Having a fever is your body's defense mechanism to fight pathogens. For every degree your body rises in temp. the speed of your white blood cells double..... A fever is actually a very good thing because your body is fighting something off.... Most people are afraid of fevers but when you are starting a new natural supplement, a healthy diet, or anything that is giving your body the nutrients it needs to build back up, it has more energy....this energy is used to fight pathogens and sometimes a fever happens. This is a good thing.... Other symptoms that you may get are aches and pains, sore throats, headaches, etc...... these are detox reaction and are a good thing. (Doc's cleanse are designed to minimize detox reactions and I feel are the best, but that is another discussion). The human body is an amazing organism. It primary job is to survive. Just think about all the prescription drugs, pesticides from foods and other environmental toxins we pour into our bodies yet we still survive though not a very high health level.... It is quite amazing.... Now say you get a fever. Your body has gained enough energy to say ok, I have some pathogens in here I have to get rid of. Now if you let the fever run its course (with plenty of water), sleep and herbal teas (ginger tea is great) your body is more healthy. You have let your body do what it is designed to do. Now if you were to try to stop your fever with western medicine, ie. aspirin or whatever.....you are telling your body to stop fighting these pathogens.... you are zapping your body of the energy to fight off these pathogens... so it tells your immune system to stop fighting these pathogens b/c there is not enough energy for your body to do so and still survive at the same time.... like I said before your body's primary job is to survive and when it has to choose between breathing and fighting off pathogens it is going to choose breathing.... But it is ready to leap back and fight those pathogens at any time when given the proper conditions... When you give your body the proper conditions and nutrients it will begin to have the energy to go and fight some problems in your body... Ok, a quick recap of what to do for a fever... 1. Lots and lots of purified water. 2. Herbal teas with purified water (ginger tea is great!! It makes you sweat) 3. Hot baths and hot/cold showers 4. Fresh fruit and veggie juices 5. Make sure your bowels are flowing!!!! Doc has a great Intestinal Cleanse #1 formula in the files.. 6. Lots of sleep and rest... 7. Stay away from meats, dairy, and processed food. Eat fresh fruits and veggies... This means no soda of any kind, only fresh purified water and fresh juices.... Guest guest
I completely understand and agree, it all makes a lot of sense. I actually did quite a bit of research today and learned that what I am experiencing are typical detox symptoms. But...I am also in school full time and this is not a good time to be staying in bed while in detox! I did end missing class today because I felt so terrible. In just 6 weeks, school will be out and I can detox away for 4 weeks, but for now I need to keep my brain cells functioning. I have not felt this "out of it" and fuzzy headed since I was given Vicoden after a C-Section. The "only" reason I even took the Nyquil last night is because I was supposed to be at school today and was getting desperate for sleep (the fever, extreme sore throat, and body aches were keeping me awake). I ended up missing school anyway, so it was all for naught. I agree, I try and avoid all medications like that normally. I have decided to stop the MSM for now until I can think again (I don't even feel safe driving a car right now), and then easing back into it in very small amounts, building back up again (hopefully it will just be a couple days and I can start again). I do everything you listed down below, such as no sodas,no meats (I eat a vegan diet, have for 2 years now), lots of water, etc. What I have not been doing is taking any supplements or herbs, and I have been taking the Allegra these past 2 years. So I still have a long way to go. I have already felt some wonderful effects of switching to the vegan diet, I ended up losing quite a bit of weight this way, purely by accident. What I am going to tackle next are my allergies. You know what I find especially interesting is this is the second fever I have had in 2 months (first one was an actual cold, this one was MSM detox related). That is unusual for me since I have not had a fever in 6 years. I usually get a cold and it will last a long time (with no fever, no matter how sick I feel), then slowly turn into cold induced asthma, etc. Earlier this fall I got a cold like normal, then a fever, and my cold was much shorter in duration. I did still get a very mild case of the cold induced asthma, but the little bit of MSM I had taken seems to have cleared that right up. I wonder if eating healthier helped my body get that fever going for my last cold. So yes, I do still want to continue with the MSM, but I need to go slower. I have to be clear headed to do well in school, I am a mom and need to be functional to care for my daughter, and I have a long commute back and forth between school and home (so I need to be safe driving). It looks like Christmas break will be the perfect time to increase the MSM and try again. I am going to go ahead and see an herbalist in a few days, so hopefully she will give me some additional things I can do in the meantime, while I wait for a break from school. Oh, and I did read through the files and quite a bit of the archives today. Thanks for lots of good info! I think I was just a little shocked at the severe flu like symptoms the MSM brought on. Now that I know what to expect I can plan a little better. Guest guest
A fever will never hurt you as long as you are drinking plenty of purified water. Rob, This is only true to a point. A high temp can hurt if it goes to high or stays up to long. Many medical professionals say not to treat a fever with antipyretics unless the temp is over 101. Children can tolerate higher temps than adults. But you are right about drinking plenty of fluids, this is really important. Collee Hope is hearing the melody of the future. Faith is to dance to it now.
Guest guest
Here is some more info I dug up on fevers (below my post)....I have some other articles by Dr. Christopher that I will try to dig up.... Collee- I hear what you are saying, that up to a point, you can treat fevers naturally..... but I just don't agree.... I feel Tylenol and other drugs aimed at bringing a fever down only do your body more harm.... eventually your body will have to deal with the reason that you had the fever in the first place...and by using drugs you are making your body suppress whatever it was trying to fight... If your fever is very high but you are very well hydrated, with purified water, freshly juiced juices and herbal teas, the fever will do no harm.... I will try to locate some more information on this for everyone... Rob Cold and Flu Compendium A Natural Approach to Children's Fevers A fever is a mechanism the immune system employed to throw off toxins and fight infection. According to Dr Christopher, "a fever can be an aid and a blessing if worked with intelligently... but if fought against ignorantly, or ignored, it is a killer. Our job in wholistic healing is to praise the fever and work with it, not fight against it. " Trying to suppress the fever with acetominophen, ibuprofen, or aspirin tricks the body into thinking it has healed before all the microbes are killed or toxic substances are thrown off by the body's defenses. Instead, we should assist the fever to rebuild a malfunctioning area with the cleaning-feeding process. When a child develops a fever , the body is doing two things; one is to draw healing aids from the body (if they are there), and the other is to discard or burn up unwanted materials. While it is true we must not let the fever reach too high a level, we can keep the fever in check while assisting the cleansing process with the following ways: When a fever first shows itself: A pleasant herbal tea of red raspberry leaf or yarrow can be given for when a fever is just starting, because it may be a minor condition or just a common cold. Red raspberry leaf tea is high in a number of organic minerals and vitamins and is a fine herbal liquid food for the body. It contains the wonderful nitrate of iron which has remarkable blood-making and regulating properties as well as astringent and contracting action on the internal tissues and membranes. It also cntains pectin, malic and other organic acids, calcium and potassium chloride and sulphates. Sweeten with honey or maple syrup or blend with fresh ( if possible) berry juice; the important thing is to get the child to drink lots of it. Next, check the bowels, to see if child is constipated. Many times a good bowel movement is all that is necessary to bring down a fever.(see flu treatment above). Do not force food on a sick child, but do offer plenty of fresh vegetable and fruit juices; these foods will help the rebuilding and cleansing process. Solid foods will only overload the digestive system at this time. The fever should be watched closely and the child should be kept from getting chilled, but don't let child overheat with too many blankets. After fever has dropped, gradually introduce solid foods starting with fresh fruits and vegetables, or lightly steamed vegetables. Avoid mucus-forming foods ( cooked and baked foods, dairy products, breads, and sugar products) for another two days. Febrile seizures: If child can not be seen by a doctor right away, place cool ( not cold) compresses behind the head, under the armpits and in the groin area to bring fever down to safe level quickly. As an emergency measure, a few drops of anti-spasmodic tincture may be placed under the tongue, but other fluids should not be given until child regains consciousness. Control fevers and prevent febrile seizures by following the above procedures and recommendations.
Guest guest
Thanks for the good info. Having a child myself, I am sure this info will come in handy. You know, I feel 100% better today after getting off the MSM, but my breathing trouble (asthma/allergies) came back! I definitely loved how I could breathe free and clear on the MSM, now to just time it right so I can be feverish and delirious when I am not in school! There is thanksgiving vacation coming up. In the meantime I am thinking of trying it again, just in very small doses until I get to a school break, then I can up it. Thanks for the fever info.
