Guest guest
Osiyo Bev! No such thing as cleaning beeswax that I know of. Too much heat will discolor the beeswax and make it hard and brittle. The dark color is the propolis mixed with the beeswax which is a translucent color. Beeswax color varies from light yellowish-white to brownish depending on purity and also the type of flowers gathered by the bees. PropolisDuring the last part of their lives, worker bees gather tree saps and mix them with bee secretions. The result is propolis, which they use to coat many surfaces in the hive. This propolis coating protects the hive from alien intrusion and infection and has many bacterial fighting properties. Propolis has been found to have beneficial properties for humans. The Constituents of Propolis Chemically speaking, propolis is a very complex mixture. Its chemical elements vary according to its source. Colors range from golden brown to brownish green to reddish brown to blackish brown. A broad analysis reveals approximately 55 percent resinous compounds and balsam, 30 percent beeswax, 10 percent ethereal and aromatic oils, and 5 percent bee pollen. Many flavonols contribute to propolis. Other components include cinnamic acid, cinnamyl alcohol, vanillin, caffeic acid, tetochrysin, isalpinin, pinocembrin, chrysin, galangin, and ferulic acid. Buying propolis is very expensive too (about $50/$60 a pound) so be happy it is there for you free. My Dad and then I kept bees until I moved to the high Rockies. I have taken cheap ($10/#) bulk beeswax and then melted it down in a double boiler to pour into little paper condiment cups. To get it soft, while watching the temperature carefully, to make a salve or balm takes special care in adding the other ingredients . So I made some Dandelion/grapeseed oil salve with the greeny brown wax its a little dark , but I have used it and it works and smells fine. so I guess scince I do not see any bee parts in it I will just use it as is. Thanks for the info. Bev >
