I have successfully used Everclear in making tinctures

- it is almost pure alcohol by volume. Good luck

In researching this, I found that if you use Everclear (grain alcohol), you

should cut it 50%

with water because it is so strong. It is not available everywhere and when I

bought it at

the liquor store, they warned me that it is very dangerous to drink. I explained

what I

wanted it for but they seemed sceptical. I did cut it 50% with filtered water

and my

tinctures came out just fine.

Pamela,

grain alcohol is actually illegal in many states, I live in NY and can't get

it here. However, you can ask any liquor store to order you 100% vodka.

Make sure you get it in glass bottles, not plastic which many come in. I

order mine by the case, I find the stores stock the plastic bottles, so

they always need to order for me. you can use 80% proof, but for most herbs

the medicine in the herbs extracts better in a 100% proof.

Jackie,

when you cut the grain alcohol you want to use distilled water and not

filtered water. you do not know what is in the filtered water and distilled

water will pull the medicine from the herbs much better than filtered water

which is full of minerals that may be harmful and spoil your tincture.

Would Everclear, which I am told is stocked by liquor

stores be comparable to 100% proof vodka and just as

suitable for tinctures?

I've only used 80 proof in the past.

Everclear is 95% alcohol

100 proof is 50% alcohol and

80 proof is 40 % alcohol

they all extract differently. If you go to Michael Moores herbal website

you will see what he recommends using to extract from different herbs.

If you have the equipment and the time, you can produce 100% ethanol

from any plant. Just need the sterilized plant/water mixture such as

obtained after steam distilling off the essential oils (preferably

under a vacuum to not destroy the alkaloids). Then add brewer's yeast

and some sugar and let it ferment. Multiple distillations are then

required to obtain the pure alcohol. Or if you have access to grape

vines you can make wine and then distill the alcohol from the wine.

Check local laws to make sure that this process isn't illegal in your

area. But it is much faster and less time intensive to just buy some

Everclear ;) Plus it takes a lot of fresh plant material to produce a

sufficient batch of ethanol.

Just my 2 cents

I believe the amount of alcohol your taking in is so minut it really doesnt matter the other thing that you can do is drop it in warm water and the alcohol will evaporate.

Organic apple cider vinegar will work and works better with some herbs

than alcohol. You might not get the same separation, but it's an

alternative. Does anyone else know of something that would work?

Organic Apple Cider vinegar is usually used for the softer herbs. And alcohol is used for the harder herbs, like some barks and roots.

Alcohol has more pulling power but ACV helps move the tincture through the body more efficiently and has beneficial properties on it own.

In Doc Shillington's Liver-Gallbladder tincture (listed below), it is made with alcohol. And I know he uses this on some pretty sick people. So I am sure the little bit of alcohol used wouldn't be a problem. As long as there is sufficient amount of herbs in the formula and the alcohol has at least 2 weeks to pull out the healing properties of the herbs, I don't think it should be a problem.

The first thing to do with any liver problems is to do some serious intestinal cleansing. This will lighten the load on the liver and make it's job as a body detoxifier much easier. (Doc's file have a great intestinal cleanse)

Hubby is a recovering alcoholic (12 years now!) and he will not touch anything remotely related to alcohol.Gina Kopera <ginakopera1 wrote:

Thank you for the clarification Rob. I always wondered why ACV was

used in some preparations while alcohol was used in others. Someone

brought it up in an earlier response to this thread that the alcohol

will be mostly evaporated in a hot beverage. I completely forgot about

that fact and I'm glad they caught that. I'm so glad I joined this

group. I learn something new every time I open my email.
