Guest guest Posted September 8, 2005 Report Share Posted September 8, 2005 Carole, I am an old Labor and Delivery and Nursery nurse, It sounds like she really should investigate a home birth, but a certified Nurse Midwife cannot legally do it (an RN with special training). She will need to find a lay or what they used to call a "granny" midwife. Many of those, however, are also going to want to check her for gestational diabetes. That is when the mother develops diabetes during pregnancy, and it goes away after, although it does increase the chances somewhat that she will develop diabetes later in life and for sure have it with her subsequent pregnancies. The reason they want to know is that the baby can grow too big, she needs to be on a really strict diet, and the baby needs to be watched and checked carefully after birth for a while. Lay midwives are just as diligent, if they are good ones, as other certified midwives. I don't know the situation in Clearwater so I couldn't help her with finding one. Also, a Doula does not deliver babies, they are strictly for support and a source of comfort for the mother, whether at home, in a birthing center, or in a hospital.
