Unconventional Therapies - Chondriana / Life Crystal(s)

The role of your cancer health professional is to create an environment of openness and trust, and to help in making informed decisions about alternative/complementary therapies. Collaboration will improve the safe integration of all therapies during your experience with cancer. The "Summary" and "Professional Evaluation / Critique" sections of this Unconventional manual are cited directly from the medical literature, and are intended to help in the objective evaluation of alternative/complementary therapies.

SummaryAfter careful study of the literature and other information there is no evidence available that treatment with either chondriana or life crystals results in objective benefit in the treatment of cancer in humans. The BC Cancer Agency urges individuals afflicted with cancer not to participate in treatment with either chondriana or life crystals.

Description / Source / Components"Chondriana are naturally occurring micro-organisms that have been described by supporters as having a general immune-enhancing effect . . . ." (Ontario)

"Chondriana are administered by injection directly into the blood system." (Ontario)

Life crystals are said to have two main components - adenosine and guanosine phosphate - which are nucleic acids. The crystals are claimed by Merkl to engage in "cleaning up" the major and minor arteries from "cholesterol deposits, eliminating heart attacks and strokes, diabetic kidneys that are failing, leg amputations and blindness." (Quotations)

"There was a product named Chondriana that has been discontinued for about three years. Chondriana is not manufactured at any location anywhere in the world. A number of people continued to sell products that they wrongfully claim are Chondriana. Dr. Merkl spent over $3,600 (US) on advertising exposing this fraud in newspapers throughout Canada. Even after expending maximum effort to inform the public, there continued to be some unscrupulous persons who continued to sell what they claimed was Chondriana. If you see or hear of any person or clinic anywhere in the world offering to sell or treat any person with Chondriana it is a fake and a fraud." (York)

Proponent / Advocate Claims'Chondriana' and 'life crystals' are terms made up by George Merkl, who claims to be a physicist/biochemist. According to Merkl, 'chondriana' and 'life crystals' act together as a system, having the ability to boost the human immune system.

Chondriana are claimed to be like microscopic "armies that pick up frequencies from diseases and match them, consuming disease". Chondriana are said by Merkl to be "precursors (give rise to) mitochondria (subcellular organelles) and precursors of our immune system. When revitalized and injected into the blood stream, they multiply and attack infections of viral or bacterial origin." Chondriana are claimed to have a 'magic bullet' effect that "attack everything which does not belong in the human body," causing cancer remission in 95% of patients.

Professional Evaluation / CritiqueThere is no published information to date in any peer-reviewed journals on chondriana or by George Merkl, according to a literature search performed in MEDLINE and CANCERLIT.

None of the claims reported by George Merkl and others have undergone testing in animal studies, or in controlled clinical trials designed to determine, scientifically, the true effect, if any, of the 'treatment'.

Merkl claims that chondriana are synthesized from DNA and can produce nucleoli. Chondriana are said to be precursors (give rise to) mitochondria, themselves claimed to be precursors to immune elements. None of these claims are based on known anatomical and physiological facts. No scientific evidence supports the claim that chondriana exist, or that they create interferon or stimulate interleukin-2 or lymphocyte production, or have any role at all in the immune system.

Similarly, life crystals have never been shown in any objective testing to have the ability to "clean up" the human arterial system, affect blindness, diabetic kidney failure, or affect in any way the prevention or course of cancer.

Toxicity / Risks"Chondriana usually cause chills and fever one hour after administration, lasting for about 45 minutes. Nausea, vomiting and headaches may sometimes occur." (Ontario)

The following side effects have been reported from chondriana: chills, shaking and fever, sometimes headaches, nausea and vomiting.

Costs"Chondriana are not available in Canada but may be imported for personal use. One vial of chondriana costs approximately $1,000." Treatment can last for several months. (Ontario)
