Guest guest
Hi! A friend of mine in Clearwater, FL, sent me the following message. Can anyone help with this? “I'm in a deadlock with the birthing center right now over some tests I just found out that they legally have to do in order to have me deliver there. I don't want to do them - I've been waiving nearly all the tests that the birthing center we're using has wanted to do - anything invasive or that I think is bad for baby and unnecessary, by my own research, I haven't done. I'm really not in agreement with most things the medical-establishment condones or insists on - which is why we decided on a midwife and birthing center in the first place. So - if I do the test and it is positive, or if I refuse to do it, they will refer me to a doctor and hospital. There is absolutely no way that I am getting involved with doctors and hospitals. I would rather have this baby at home by myself. I am not concerned about the birth, not afraid of it, and actually looking forward to it. On the other hand, I am terrified of being in a position where I " have " to have this baby in a hospital, where I have no or little control over the process, and have my baby in a bright, cold room full of noise and confusion, or even worse, become one of those 1 in 3 women in this country who end up with a C-section just because they are in a hospital with all the interventions that come with that scenario. What I want is a peaceful experience, where I am free to move around, don't have anyone poking and prodding at me other than to check dialation, where I can feel calm, relaxed, and in control of what is happening to my body and my baby, not have to worry about unnecessary interventions, and have a Dianetic birth. (This means the doctor and/or midwife agree to not talk during the birth, for the mental wellbeing of the baby and the mother. ~ Carole) This is sounding more and more like it may mean a home birth. When you had your baby at home, did you have a midwife? A doula? I am wondering if I would have to have a midwife present for a home birth. According to what the birthing center tells me, any certified midwife wouldn't be able to deliver me if I have gestational diabetes, or if I refuse to do the test for it. I need to find out if that is true. I am also wondering if a Doula is qualified to deliver a baby alone in my home - can I just find a Doula and have this baby here, with no more fuss? Sorry this is so long. Any data or viewpoints you have at all will be really appreciated!!!” Thanks! Carole

Guest guest
Hi, I also live in Florida on the other coast and I'm kind of curious as to what kind of tests she's being required to have. I had my youngest in a women and children's hospital in Orlando (almost 15 years ago) and don't recall any tests being done, legal-wise or not. It was definitely a hospital, but the room was subtley lit and in mauve, etc. tones, and everyone was real calm, real nice, and real professional. Denise Carole Eddington <caroleeddington wrote: Hi!
