concerning organic produce

Another question for Doc!

I am trying to decide which is the lesser of two evils: purchasing

organic produce that has been shipped cross-country, or purchasing

locally grown produce that has been grown with chemicals. We have

virtually eliminated chemically grown produce from our diet (has been

one year now!) But, there is a vineyard down the road from me and it

is harvest-time. We went last year with the kids and picked grapes,

then I found out the owner had used a fungicide. I talked to the

owner and he said that it was impossible to grow grapes in our area

without some form of chemicals used because of the hot, humid summers

we get (SE Michigan). Well, the kids are begging to go pick grapes

again (they saw the flyer that they are ready) and I really don't know

if we should. It has been a long haul over this past year and I don't

want to backtrack! Doc, your opinion please! Warm regards, Lori

Interesting question, as I find myself in the same boat. We have a lot of farmers' markets and roadside stands here and most of the local people use some form of pesticide. Their produce is so fresh and good and I figure that, although they may have little something on it, they certainly aren't out doing massive crop dusting on their little gardens. So I often buy what they grow in the summer and just wash it really well. I'd be interested to hear Doc's reply.

I can understand the local farmers thinking that they need the pesticides.

Maybe if you suggest organic pesticides and fertilizers? Gardens Alive has a

great line and it would be better than what you get at Walmart. Just a thought

for next year?

Believe me, I have suggested organic alternatives until I am blue in

the face! I guess the old adage about old dogs is true! I do grow a

lot of the produce that my family consumes, but there are some things

that I don't have, such as fruit and nut trees and a vineyard. I do

have a source for organic apples, but stone fruits are impossible to

find this year (we were hit by a frost that wiped out the organic peach

and cherry blossoms :( ) I was just curious as to what Doc would do in

this situation, because I feel like I am between a rock and a hard

place! I am leaning towards putting up a bushel of non-organic peaches

for the winter and picking the non-organic grapes, but would really

If these are your only choices, you should really go with the ORGANIC.

The locally grown = grown with chemicals will most likely have pesticides, herbicides, and un-natural fertilizers as well as what you mentioned. This farmer is probably blowing smoke through his ears and / or is just ignorant.

Grapes in that area CAN be grown organically.

I wouldn't allow the "back track" ;-)
