Hm.....well I live in the UK and apparently:

" As a result of the outcome of safety assessments which have been

carried out Stevia and stevioside are not permitted for sale as food

or food ingredients in the UK or elsewhere within the EU.

A further application for approval of stevioside was received by the

European Commission in 1998 and again referred to the SCF.

The data considered by the Committee indicated that the extract has

the potential to produce adverse effects in the male reproductive

system that could affect fertility and that a metabolite produced by

the human gut microflora, steviol, is genotoxic (ie. damages DNA).

The Committee concluded that stevioside was not acceptable as a

sweetener. "

This was a recipe of my grandmother's. She lived to the age of 98,

her sisters were also late 90's when they died. Apart from occasional

colds they never had a days illness in their lives and all died

peacefully in their sleep. I will be glad if I live such a long and

healthy life, sugar or no sugar!

Hi Lesley Ann

I also live in the UK, and you can just buy Stevia on line from USA - that's what I did.

However, I know that you can buy organic maple syrup here. Not sure about raw honey as I've never tried to find it.

Stevia has been in use for hundreds of years, particularly by people of Southern America from

which the shrub is indigenous. It’s

a shrub – a plant. How can

that hurt? I’d be suspect of

any government study.

A good sugar substitute is XYLI. It is the only one

that I have seen that says it is beneficial. It is

beneficial for the flora in your mouth and ears. It

is very sweet, and cheaper than Stevia.

It's still an artificial sweetener. Your best option is a naturally occurring live food to sweeten your foods.

Why do you say that xylitol is artificial? Isn't it a natural sweetener made from fruits, vegetables, or birch trees?

Just curious.
