There are a broad variety of reasons for this dysfunction, including a deviated septum and response to several common drugs people take today for colds and flu. In addition, nerve endings may be damaged from arthritis or osteoporosis (one of the reasons this problem afflicts older people more than younger people). The natural healing emphasis on overcoming nutritional deficiencies is often able to successfully address many of the root causes. Aromatherapy is gaining importance for taste and smell problems because what we call "taste" (as much as 90%) is actually smell. In most cases, if total astrophy has not developed, at least partial taste and smell can be restored.

1- Boost your minerals to enhance your sense of smell: Magnesiium 1200mg daily: Zinc, up to 100mg daily. Most people with sensory, especially, taste loss have a zinc deficiency.

A multi-mineral supplement, 4-6 capsules daily.

2- Boost your circulation: Ginkgo Biloba extract 4X daily, a primary sensory aid. Add B-12, 2500mg daily (acts on taste), with B-complex 100mg daily, with extra B6 100mg and flush-free niacin 100mg for best results. Cayenne and ginger are excellent too.

3- Enhance your thyroid activity: Ester C 550mg with bioflavonoids 4-6 daily.

Add any Sea Greens to your diet: Kelp, Kombu, Hijifi, Nori, Arame, Sea Palm, Bladderwrack, Wakame, Dulse, or Irish moss, 2 TBS chopped dry, daily over your meals, they re-mineralize and convert inorganic minerals into organic minerals. Sea Greens have superior nutritional content.

4- Boost your neurotransmitters: phosphatidyl choline 3000mg, GABA 1000mg or Choline 600mg. (if your choline levels are low, try Huperzine A 50mg to allow levels to rise) Take 1/4 teasp, each: Glutamine powder and Glycine powder; or Glutamine 1000mg 2X daily Evening primrose oil 2-4 daily.

5- Herbal adaptogens like ginseng help normalize body systems: Siberian ginseng and royal jelly capsules 3-4 daily; or Siberian ginseng extract capsules 2 daily; Superior ginseng/royal jelly vials 1 daily; propolis extract under the tongue 3-4X daily.

Regular exercise with deep diaphragmatic breathing to keep passages clear help also.
