Actually to be more precise, pH stands for "power Hydrogen". This comes from the German, "powerenz Hydrogen" where the orginal research on this was done, and putting it into simple terms indicates whether or not a chemical compound is Hydrogen based or Hydrogen / Oxygen based.

 

An Acid is numbers (power) of the Hydrogen atoms mixed with other chemicals whereas an Alkaline is an (OH) or Oxygen / Hydrogen combination mixed with other chemicals.

 

IE.

Acid: Carbonic Acid = H2CO3 Hydrochloric Acid = HCL

Alkaline: Sodium Hydroxide = Na (OH)

 

In an Alkaline you always have the (OH) combination in that exact balance. In an acid such as Hydrochloric Acid (HCL) there may be no presence of Oxygen whatsoever.
