In brief, Dr. Elise Bassin in her successfully defended PhD thesis at Harvard University showed that young boys exposed to fluoridated water during their mid-childhood growth spurt had a significant increase in osteosarcoma by the age of 20. This was a very important and serious finding, as osteosarcoma is frequently fatal bone cancer in young males. However, according to recent reports in the Washington Post (July 13); the Associated Press (July 13) and the Wall Street Journal (July 22), Bassin's thesis advisor has kept this information away from both the public and even his funders (the NIEHS). This clear violation of scientific integrity is currently being investigated by both Harvard University and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), see http://www.ewg.org. There are moves afoot to step up calls for a US Congressional hearing on this matter. Here is an important way you can help with this effort. Dr. Deborah Moore, Executive Director of Second Look, requested that I ask those of you with advanced degrees to please consider adding your name to the Statement of Concern on Fluoridation (SoC), which Second Look has been circulating. I urge you to do so. Currently over 200 professionals (dentists, MDs and PhDs) and over 30 organizations have signed. Signatories can be viewed at: <http://www.slweb.org/soc-signatories.pdf>The SoC itself does not demand an end to fluoridation, but it expresses serious concerns, lists many references, and asks for a Congressional investigation into this public policy. When the SoC is submitted, it will be with a cover letter that will update the situation regarding the thesis scandal and noting that these developments make the request for Congressional hearings even more compelling.Paul Connett, PhD,Professor of Chemistry,St. Lawrence University,Canton, NY 13617.(and Executive Director,Fluoride Action Networkhttp://www.fluorideaction.net)To Sign the Statement of Concern on Fluoridation.EITHER Go to this link: <http://www.slweb.org/soc1.pdf>, read the 2-page Statement (and the supporting documents, if you wish), print out ONLY page 2 (the signature page), fill out the signature form, and fax or mail it to Second Look, using the contact information at the bottom of that page. OR Fill out the details below and email to <secondlook1 . It is understood that by supplying the following information, you are calling for a re-examination of the public policy of fluoridation, and supporting the growing demand for a full US Congressional inquiry into the policy and the practice of water fluoridation:NAME, professional degree(s), title and/or position: _______Address:_________________________ City________________ State or Province: ____________________ Zip: ________________ Country_________________________________Occupation_____________________________ Affiliation (for identification purposes only)E-mail:_______________________ Phone: _________
