Stinks it does! I can't find one brand of herbs and spices that has the botanical names on them. Some of them give a little story about them like " Basil - heavily scented green leafy plant that is one of the most popular herbs in Mediterranean cooking, blah blah " but no botanical names anywhere on the bottles. > or from a knowledgeable Herb seller they will. ... Yep, that is probably the best bet ! <heavily snipped> > Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com You too! :-D *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com
Guest guest
Hey Jen, Marilyn, other good folks .. > > Can someone please tell me about the differences between the > > marjorams? > > > > I'm not sure which is the variety that we cook with. Herbs should > > have the scientific names on them as well! They should .. and if you buy them in itty-bitty bottles .. like from McCormicks or from a knowledgeable Herb seller they will. But even then there is much confusion on the question you have asked. > > Thanks. > > JenB Welcome you are .. and keep reading. > Majorana hortensis is sweet marjoram Sorta .. true but not the whole truth. ;-p > MJH Marjoram is an OREGANO .. Origanum marjorana. Howsomeever, it has been misclassified and declassified and cross-classifed to death. Folks also call Thymus mastichina Spanish Marjoram .. but its a Thyme. Folks call Origanum vulgare European Wild Marjoram but it is NOT! It is Origanum vulgare .. THE classic Oregano. Folks call Origanum heracleoticum Sweet Marjoram but it is NOT! It is the same thing as Origanum vulgare .. THE classic Oregano. Folks call Origanum onites Pot Marjoram .. and they are right. Folks call Majorana hortensis Moench Sweet Marjoram and maybe it is but it is the same thing as Origanum marjorana. Folks call Origanum dubium Wild Marjoram but they are wrong .. it is a TYPE (there are NO chemotypes in Origanum) of high-carvacrol Oregano that has unfortunately been misclassified in the last few years and there is a powerful movement ongoing to have it reclassifed properly. Folks in different places call lots of other things Marjoram and almost without exception .. they are dead wrong. Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
