Dogs and food again (OT and long)

Sorry for boring everyone to bits again, but I started to read all

the former post on dogs and foods and - frankly I didn't have the

strength to go through everyone of them.

So, if you all excuse me for my lameness ;-), I started to think

about the food Fiona have been eating all her life (RC big breeds)

and the fact that nowadays she don't like it very much. I mean, I

know that some of her siblings are veritable feeding machines lol,

but my baby have always been kind of picky - if it's only dogfood in

the bowl, well she just leave it and go away. I have probably spoiled

her, but after this behavior started after her first season, I

started to put some tiny amount of canned dog food and sometimes the

tiniest amount of leftovers (if it was the right kind of stuff).

Well, you wont' believe it, but Fiona don't like raw whole meat.

ground is fine, but when I try to tempt her with some cutoffs while

if cooking or blending them in the RC stuff, she just spits it out.

She likes her meat to be cooked - funny dog! But give her a good

juicy marrow boan and she is in dog heaven for a while :-D

Anyhow, after reading all the posts the first time, I went and got my

reading glasses (can't read a word without them) and looked over the

ingredience list on the large RC bag - hmmm, lot's of corn in that.

So, when we went to the mall the other day, I went into the petshop

and started to look at the labels of the different brands they had

and found only one that seemed quite good - Choice, the skin and fur

type. So I bought a small bag, just to try it out and see if this

food was more to Fionas taste. Sofar I have seen no difference in her

feeding behaviour, cause I'm blending it with the RC food for like a

week, so her tummy won't get upset. I'm wondering if you dogowners

think this Choice brand is any good? And do you give it to your dogs

dry or whet??

Now I let you all rest from me for a while :-D I jsut poured a

beeswax candle infused with vanilla been and scented with vanilla abs

and sandalwood - who in their right mind could resist that??

Ylva,

The first thing I would tell anyone who's dog slacked off eating is

get a check up. Sometimes lack of appeptite can be a symptom. You

didn't say what age she is, but large breed over 5 is considered

geriatric. I'd definately want to see some bloodwork if she's older.

Don't panic, just check it out with a vet.

Secondly, sometimes dogs (and cats) get picky. The good news is if

you let some food sit there long enough - she WILL eat it - LOL! Once

our emotions get involved with ours dog's eating - well, then it gets

hard. We like to feel we have nurture them, take the best care, make

them happy, etc. My advice is to try to get the best food possible,

switch it over SLOWLY, over a period of days, and offer food twice a

day. If she doesn't eat when you offer food, then take it away, and

don't offer anything until the next feeding time. Eventually, she'll

see the good sense in eating what you put out for her. I'd withhold

treats during this period too, and make sure those treats are LOW FAT.

Sounds barbaric - I know, but it works. Probably will be harder on

YOU than her. She's not going to starve if she doesn't eat for a few

days - cats are another story.

If you want to feed wet food - that's ok too, just know that she'll be

more prone to dental problems - so watch her teeth and gums.

You are amazing! I wanna know how you infused that beeswax! You know

I'm sitting on 25 lbs of it - I just haven't had time to render it!

Did you just heat and soak? did you scrape the seeds into it? that

might be pretty if it doesnt' settle.

Wow - I wanna make that candle now!

Thanks Jen for the tip on wet food. I'll quit feeding it to Petey.

And I do that. If he's hungry enough, he'll eat what he's given or he won't

eat!

But I did go get that kibbles and chunks when he didn't like the Iams.

Hi JenB and thanks for the insight once again. Fiona is just 2 years

old and she doesn't lack in apetite directly, I think she is just

picky. The vet checked her out the other week when she got her yearly

vaccination shot and she said that Fiona have just the right amount

of flesh on her body.

About taking her bowl away - yep, I know and have been seen to do

that occationaly ;-) And sooner or later, she eats whatever she is

offered, even if it's just doggiefood lol. I admit - it's me that is

the problem here, I fuss over her like she is a human baby - BIG

mistake huh! It's just like with my boys when they where babies, if

they didn't eat " enough " I'm started to worry. By now I have learned

better and knwos that children can survive on the most strange menues

for a long period of time LOL.

But is Choice considered a rely good brand of dogfood? I read on all

the other brands labels (like Ekanuba, RC and some other) and Choice

come out as the only one not containing corn and had a ingredient

list I could actualy understand :-)

On the beeswax infusing thing I must confess that I do not know if

the vanilla scent is there when it's burned. Like with every other

beeswax candle I have made, the beeswax scent is very distinct

(that's why I now is looking for soywax) and the added scents kind of

melts in with it. The only way I have been successfull of gettign a

strong scent when burned, is when I added floral waxes and some

aokmoss abs. - that smelled like heaven even when it was not burned.

But - I cut up the vanilla pod in tiny bits and melted the wax (DB)

with it. I let it simmer for like 2-3 hours in the melted wax,

covered and then strained it while I was pouring it. The leftover wax

with the tiny vanilla seeds I have saved for using as a base in a

solid rose perfume. I put the leftover wax along with the vanilla pod

bits in a small glassjar to let it infuse even more.

Talking of infusing - have you tried infusing VODCC with vanilla

pods? I have and let me say it's good enought to eat and extremely

adictive :-D I have been using it in lipbalms and in one body lotion -

jeeeezzzz, it just smells devine.
