Quality of EO's

Hi Veliraf.

> A question for the list-

I'll give you my two cents .. and hope someone else puts in theirs.

To begin with .. in addition to getting oils you like for what you

consider as being a fair price, you have to look at the service the

seller offers. Service is important in all aspects of life.

> There have recently been discussions about the quality of essential

> oils out there.

I think that question is second only to " What is the origin of life. "

> For the normal lay-person- how are you supposed to know who has the

> best oils?

Tain't easy .. cause olfactory perception is a very individual thing

even for the those who consider themselves as experts. So asking a

friend may or may not be the solution. I recommend you get samples when

you can .. and/or buy in the smallest sizes you can. Even then, you're

not going to find any one supplier who will offer ALL of the oils you

will personally decide are the BEST for YOU.

Proof (as best as possible) of quality and purity can be had by asking

for copies of the analysis of the oil .. but everybody doesn't test all

their oils .. and also, it is not impossible to fool a GC/MS .. smart

chemists can do it .. still, an analysis is better than none methinks.

Sorta like a polygraph or a EKG .. not foolproof but they're good.

> I have ordered quite a few to use in my soap-making enterprise, as I

> want the beneficial effects of the oils, and NOT just the smell.

I like the attitude .. though I doubt that in soap making you will gain

a heckuva lotta therapeutic value outside some of the odor. That's

cause soap doesn't stay on the body long enough for one to get a whole

lotta the odor .. and you can forget the old tales about absorption as

they are hawgwash. Take this from one who doesn't deal in Commercial

grade oils .. only in Aromatherapy grade.

> They have been ordered from a couple of Canadian suppliers, as I

> live here, and importing is a pain.

So .. are you asking how does one determine who is the best Canadian

supplier? ;-p

> I looked around for a while before I purchased, and yes- I did try to

> go with the most reasonable price.

But .. the most reasonable price takes into consideration not only the

size of the bottle .. but the origin of the oil. Many essential oils

are 2 X or 3 X the price of another of the same size due to the origin

alone .. and well worth that difference. So when comparing, take that

into consideration.

> For example since Ylang Ylang is the only(??) oil that is graded

Sorta .. its not really graded .. well, maybe it is. Naa .. it ain't.

Its 4 or 5 .. sometimes a ridiculous 6 allegedly different oils with

different chemical profiles. Ylang Ylang is the only oil I know of that

is accepted as a fractionated oil by ALL aromatherapists.

> I compared prices from different people. Some were double, or even

> more than that, the price of others- which just amazed me- since

> technically it would be for the same thing- wouldn't it??

Not at all .. depends again on whether they are Commercial Grade or

Aromatherapy Grade. But price variances are determined by a lot of

things .. I'll name a few .. other folks can add more.

1. Volume of sales .. if one sells enough oils to be able to purchase

in large volume, they can sell at a lower cost.

2. Greed .. some folks just wanna gouge folks as best they can.

3. Ignorance .. this business requires a heckuva lotta marketing

research .. not only do you have to know how to price your oils for

sale, but you gotta see what others are selling them for if you wanna

be competitive. And to do this, you gotta figure your own REAL COSTS..

and that means .. down to the millimeter.

> Slightly confused :)

> Nicole

It'll work itself out in time. You'll know what you like and to you,

that will be reality .. it will be the best oils. :-)
