Guest guest
Hey Sandi, > > This is an old one .. from 20 July. I have just today (based on a suggestion from a list member (Delaney) written to 8 of my Canadian customers. Delaney gave me the following info: > For all import shipments from USA and Mexico, Canada has a commercial > trading agreement based on NAFTA which abolishs all duties and taxes > from almost every imported product manufactured in the 3 countries as > long as the manufacturer supplies a Certificate of Origin which > certify the origins of the goods. > For imported goods from other origins yes there are duties, taxes > brokerage fees. This is where the problem may lie. But ... as one of those customers has stated in reply .. being exempt from duties does not exempt you from Canadian taxes. It seems that WHEN a shipment goes through Canada's Big Brother agencies they charge a 7% GST? and a flat $5 charge regardless of value if the shipment comes in via Postal .. if it comes in via Courier (FedEx, UPS and the like) I understand the same $5 charge applies but then they all it a " brokerage fee. " This term " brokerage " as used is different from the way we think of it in the USA. If anyone has more info on this .. I'd appreciate it .. off line or on. I'll say this about US duties .. almost ALL items I ship to the USA from Turkey are without duty .. unless the gross value (includes shipping) of one particular line item exceeds $1,200 .. then there is a flat $125 fee I must pay. They know the fair market value of goods so trying to get around them with low ball figures doesn't work .. and the last thing an importer/exporter wants to do is get on the USDA/FDA/US Customs Crapper List .. they can make things tough. Plus its kinda risky to play such games cause one can only insure for the value of an invoice. Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
