Guest guest
Hope everyone has been doing well. I've been busy, busy, and am over a week behind in replying to emails. *sigh* And I had just gotten caught up too. Anyhoo ... I've been following this discussion with interest. As a result, I've been doing some checking on the internet. Of course, I'm thoroughly confuzzled by many of the claims, the warnings, the labels, etc. One of the things that has me confuzzled is that someone mentioned they feed their cats Evolve Organic. Part of what I've read says you don't want to feed your meat meal (such as chicken meal). The ingredient listing I found for Evolve lists chicken meal as ingredient # 2... at least it isn't chicken by-product meal. And from looking at the list, it appears that somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 of the ingredients are additives (vitamins, minerals, and I'm not sure what else). I've begun looking at ingredient lists for cat food. I've been feeding our cats Science Diet because that's what the vet recommended. I never looked at the ingredient list before because I don't know much about animal physiology, and figured the vet wouldn't recommend something that wasn't good. Well, number 1 ingredient is chicken by-product meal, and number 2 is corn. ACK!! So I'm looking for a new cat food. Evolve is a possibility, and I'm also considering Innova. Another one I'm interested in is Balance Diet Supreme-V Feline Nutrition, but I can't find it on the manufacturer's website, or anywhere else on the internet aside from it being listed in About.com's Top 10 Picks. I have no idea if the person putting the list together is wrong, or if it's been discontinued, but if it's anything like the canine version, it looks to be an awesome food. Big problem is that we have three cats. One is a rotund (putting it politely) 20+ pounder, and 5 years. Second is 4 years, and about 16 pounds or so, definitely not overweight according to the vet on his last visit. The third is a 6 month old kitten. We give the kitten the kitten version of Science Diet, mostly because of the extra nutrition a growing youngster needs (even though he likes to eat the older boys' food). The older ones get hairball control light. Innova does have a light version, which is cool because chubby boy certainly doesn't need the full fat version. I think they also have a kitten formula. So if I switch their food, how do I help with hairballs? Even with the hairball control they yack at least a couple of times a month (the older ones are both long hairs), and men being men, I'm the only one who cleans it up. Oh, and while we're on the topic of pet food, here's an interesting, yet disturbing, article about commercial foods. It's not for the super-sensitive or the squeamish. www.belfield.com%2Farticle3.html After reading this, I'm really not happy with the pet food industry and wondering which company/brand I can trust..
