I use either the Jade from Between Friends Too.....or Rainforest from Soapwerks. sometimes I also add Green #5 to the mica, I think it gives it a bit more depth. margie www.hillcountryhaiku.com
Guest guest
Hi Chris! How are you? I'm sure you're still really busy. I'm moving too! But just one town over from where I am currently. But, to a MUCH MUCH better place!! So, I'm excited. I'm moving this wkend. When you have a chance, can you tell me what the best colorant would be to make a nice Forest Green colored XMas soap? I tried a green mica, but it went grey.....so, now my XMas soap is grey....Should I use a green oxide? And, do you use the Milky Way molds? If so, do you have problems getting the soap out? I sure do! Even after putting it in the freezer. It helps, but it's still difficult. Would spraying the mold w/Pam first help? Thanks Chris, Rebecca
Guest guest
> Hi Chris! Hi Rebecca > How are you? I'm sure you're still really busy. That is an understatement! Getting unpacked and settled is really a chore to say the least - sheesh! And I believe the stress of all this move has finally hit my 4 yr old as all of a sudden yesterday afternoon he went from being totally fine and running around like 4 yr olds do - to feeling hot to my touch and when I took his temperature it was 103.6 and since then he pretty much crashed and burned and is now all tired sick, hot, mopey and achy. So I am nursing him back to health and hoping the baby doesn't get sick, but he seems kinda blah today too and has little circles under his eyes. I'm not surprised by this though - new climate, new place, lots of upheaval, changes and stress, it was kind of to be expected. > I'm moving too! But just one town over from where I am currently. But, to a MUCH MUCH better place!! So, I'm excited. I'm moving this wkend. Happy moving! I hope it goes smoothly. Whether folks are moving right next door, or to the next town or across the country - it still means a lot of packing and unpacking to do! > When you have a chance, can you tell me what the best colorant would be to make a nice Forest Green colored XMas soap? I tried a green mica, but it went grey.....so, now my XMas soap is grey....Should I use a green oxide? Ya know I haven't used the oxides or micas personally, but I know that in my experience parsley is a great herb that stays green in soap. Using a good amount of pomace in your soap recipe will give you a green soap too, and french green clay stays green in soap. Good luck with that Christmas soap. Let us know how it turns out I can't wait to get soaping again myself ! > And, do you use the Milky Way molds? If so, do you have problems getting the soap out? I sure do! I haven't done the Pam thing since I haven't needed to - but I have seen lots of folks recommend using Pam for molds. Anyone here had success with that? > Thanks Chris, Rebecca *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com
Guest guest
Hi Chris! How are your children? Sick children as so sad! Thanks for the advice about colorants....but, what is the freeze and thaw method? Is it that you quickly dip the mold that's been in the freezer into hot water, then try to pop out the soap? Thanks! Guest guest
> Hi Chris! Hi again Rebecca > How are your children? Sick children as so sad! I've been giving the bigger one lots of Vitamin C and both of them some homeopathic remedies that my doc from back in Denver gave me (they are part of his basic " Home Remedy Kit " . I also gave them a nice lukewarm bath earlier, and that really seemed to help them both out. The baby is now being his normal happy baby self and my 4 yr old is still relaxing, but his fever is a lot lower than it was this morning (just running a slight fever now), his appetite is back and he's his normal demanding self " Mommy I want this .. Mommy I want that ... Mommy I want this again .... *lol* Thank you for the concern and for asking > Thanks for the advice about colorants.... I do hope you find something that works to give you the results that you desire. I'm sure with all the great soapers on this list you'll get plenty of good ideas and advice > but, what is the freeze and thaw method? Is it that you quickly dip the mold that's been in the freezer into hot water, then try to pop out the soap? Actually I freeze it for a few hours and then set it on the counter for a little bit till it starts to sweat and it just pops right out for me that way ... at least it did in Colorado, I have no idea if things like that will change now that I am in a different climate ... ? > Thanks! Guest guest
Margie - I read your post re: using micas to color your soap and your success with this method. It has been my experience that micas do NOT work in cold-process soaps. What type soaps do you make? Rebecca - As for green coloring, I find that many herbs will fade over time. I have used chromium green oxide in the past and it seems to hold its color, however, I have decided not to use any synthetics in my soaps sooooo - back to the drawing board. My newest venture has been with green tea. I grind it up to a very smooth powder and use this. I make 12 pound batches and have used 1/4 cup or more depending on the depth of color you wish to achieve. The tea will leave little specks in the soap, but I like this look. Much luck. Guest guest
Sounds like your children really recuperated fast, I'm glad. I don't have my own kids, but I have a niece and a nephew, and, when they were little and were sick, I always felt so bad for them! Can I ask about your soap recipes? Do you use 'harder' recipes? ie, don't superfat, or use Avacado oil, or something. I'm wondering if it's easier to get the soaps out if they're made w/oils that make a harder soap? I'm quite frustrated, because I thought I'd have some beautiful white soap from the MW angel slab mold, and they are all ruined now....It's very frustrating!
