Guest guest
MM and Good Morning Everyone... I have been searching for something for my daughter to use during labor so that she doesn't have to use drugs (or @ least cut down the amount she might use)... I have done my best to talk her into natural childbirth but she would like to know that there are alternatives. I have heard if you mix clary sage with a base oil and use in on the laboring momma's back and belly it reduces pain and speeds up labor... but I need other things to use too. She doesn't have much confidence in childbirth preparation courses (she watches 2 much Discovery Health... lol) I'd appreciate any help I could get... THANKS BB, ~Mishka
Guest guest
Congratulations Grandma (and welcome to the list I'm not surprised that your daughter, like many other women in our society is reserved about/afraid of an undrugged birth and the whole " natural childbirth " thing. It really talks about birth as a rite of passage, rather than a scary medical procedure It has a lot of wonderful facts, exercises, activities, methods, and has great stuff for dads too! I make up (what I think to be) a really nice labor and delivery blend that I used myself in 2 natural labors (including one homebirth/waterbirth) and I have passed it along to my midwife and a few doulas - including one on this list - Dale B.. They all tell me that their clients have enjoyed their experience with it I don't have the recipe unpacked yet, but I did find the bottle of the blend that I do sell (it just hasn't made it to the website yet - so if you wanted some just e-mail me to let me know . *Smile* Chris (list mom) PS - Tell her to stop watching those dang Discovery Channel birthing shows! When I knew I was expecting again...i decided there is no way they will drug me up...I was told to walk...to get as strong as I can and being Native American and back with my people there were those who had ideas for me..such as a natural birth...including the proper breathing...most of all...we do not lay on our backs..a sitting position which allows the baby to move lower without as much work from Mom...my labor was only 2 1/2 hours and my Son was 8 lbs 7oz...22inches long..very big baby and I have always weighted under 100 pounds...the doctor did not think I could do this...but with a lot of prayer....relaxation technics all went fine... good luck and I agree don't watch those births on TV ... Guest guest
You've GOT TO put this blend out there! Might I also recommend that the granddaughter read 'Mind Over Labor' by Carl Jones and last but not least 'Birth Over 35' (I think that's the title) by Sheila Kitzinger? The first book helps you view birth as the spiritual event it was meant to be. It's not sappy but it certainly reinforces how your baby connects to both mother and father constantly. The other book is the book that should be given to all pregnant women regardless of age. She speaks of the birthing climate for all women today - medical, spiritual, personal journey, etc. But especially useful is the in-depth information she gives about medical procedures for both prenatal and laboring care. She repeatedly affirms everything is YOUR decision in the end - you own the birth. Dale - Christine Ziegler Friday, October 24, 2003 4:10 PM RE: Labor Oils? Guest guest
Marcine - When you are young you trust a lot of people - you're unsure and trust others to guide you. Upright is definitely the best position. In addition to walking and letting gravity bring the baby down I want to point out that the tailbone moves back and forth as the baby descends - it's very mobile. Being on your back or sitting ON something (such as that hospital delivery bed) restricts the tailbone from moving out of the way for baby to complete those last millimeters of the journey. Birth balls are nice as they are flexible and when sitting on them for support - your legs sure get tired walking and squatting! - the tailbone isn't nearly as restricted (the tailbone should be sitting pretty far back). Your meds memory brought my memory to mind: my youngest son was born premature. I'd already had a natural VBAC before his birth. I was in labor with him and had already determined that I was going to do this without pain medication too. I wanted to give him every chance at life (8 1/2 weeks early). This labor went pretty quick and I recall after the birth a nurse asking the doctor if there were any pain meds (teaching hospital). The doc's reply: of course not - this baby is premature. think of the consequences to the lungs (pain meds depress the respiratory system). Why oh why couldn't I have recorded that??? Guest guest
Where is your granddaughter? Is she willing to take a class in natural childbirth? If so, I know people for her. Taking this class will help her understand the physical as well as the physiological process of birth. I think it's only human to be afraid of what you don't know - so help her get educated! Butch and I think Chris sell rose and lavender hydrosols that are very nice for when the body becomes very heated from the work of active labor. When I am there as doula I also use Badger Balm for foot massages. You may want to check out this link for using various acupressure points for labor. http://home.clear.net.nz/pages/debra_betts/ Dale - Mishka Friday, October 24, 2003 3:12 PM Labor Oils? Guest guest
Mishka - Try Dena Pope, she is a natural childbirth instructor in Scottsdale. Her number is 480-473-9116 - The Bradley Method of childbirth. She could probably give her private instruction which might be more helpful to your granddaughter as she can feel free to speak her mind one on one. I've let her know she might receive a phone call from you or your granddaughter. If your granddaughter calls just let Dena know that she is 'Mishka's granddaughter' Dale - Mishka Tuesday, October 28, 2003 2:38 PM Re: Labor Oils?
