Butch,

Extremely good point, and let's not forget the Korean War memorial. And

Iowa Jima - set in a busy thoroughfare, it never fails to amaze me. Such

is the power of art - the motion and sheer PATHOS of that memorial blows

me away. Having grown up there in(around) DC, it's the pulse and the

heartbeat of so much of this nation - and I don't refer to the gov't. I

visit all the memorials when I can, the Jefferson being a fav, spend

some quiet time walking and reading - will change you I'm sure. Lincoln

too. Don't let the tourists annoy you - slip into a slightly medatative

state (sniff some frankincense) and wander freely.

My favorite Great-Uncle fought on the Japanse front of WW2 - I LOVE

hearing his stories - I hate to think we will forget that stuff. My

Grandfather died in Korea (isn't it odd that my AF husband and I are

slated to go there this spring? I'll only be the second person in my

family to go there.)

But more than the memorials, DC is a treasure trove! Take a look at the

treasury, the library of congess, the Dept. of agriculture, and

(needless to say) the Smithsonian (Castle,) DAR Constiution Hall etc.

The there is the Capitol itself. Embassy Row is worth a look, so is the

surrounding architecture of Capitol Hill and then Georgetown. But this

is all from the POV of an Art History Major, and native!!

When are you going? and would you like company? I am planning a trip

back up there soon, and would love to meet you and be a very willing

tour guide!!!

I have never been to Washington, D.C. and don't see a trip there in the near

future but I was lucky enough to get to see the traveling wall when I was

visiting my mother in Kentucky some years ago and it was a very humbling

experience. There were names there that I new from high school. It doesn't

matter whether you were for the war or not. What matters is that there are

sons, daughters, husbands, fathers, and a multitude or other relationships

commemorated there and they deserve our respect as do the ones who came home

alive. God Bless them all.
