Guest guest
Hey Rebecca, > I *must* put my two cents in regarding the Pepsi question. Mostly from a health > viewpoint, but, also, addressing the " Under God " question. Right .. and I figger I must use this for a springboard to talk about what's going down in Allybammer rat'now. Old judge feller might be just pushing an issue that has never been truly resolved in the US of A .. the issue of State's Rights. ;-p Federal Gummit ain't s'posed to be telling the 50 INDEPENDENT and AUTONOMOUS states what they can and can't do less'n it crosses wires with the LIFE, LIBERTY, PROPERTY and pursuit of happiness of our US citizens. Some states have ELECTED to allow gambling, prostitution, possession of certain amounts of marijuana (not for resell) posted different speed limits on their highways .. tax this and that or don't tax that or this .. and other things which are purely a matter of State's Rights. Brother King decided to violate Federal Court Orders cause he believed they wuz not constitutional .. and he was right and the laws were later changed. But it took a heroic lady like Rose to refuse to go to the back of the bus and later, a feller like MLK Jr. to take the falls to make the points necessary to effect the changes. Seems to me that Jedge Moore is sorta going along the same lines .. he done said I can't deny the existence of Gawd cause I done swore when I took my oath to do this and that " So Help Me Gawd " and setch. Seems to me the Jedge got a good arguement even though his feller justices done wimped out. Also seems to me that if the US gummit is so concerned about separation of church and state they'd make my feller Suthran Fried Baptists start allowing the sale of beer and setch on Sunday .. can't get none in Jawja or other Suth'ran states .. and seems to me that whut's written on the coins we carry sorta smacks of LACK of separation of church and state. If the Jews wanted " In Jehovia We Trust " or the Moslems wante In Allah We Trust " (both the same meaning as Gawd but different languages) would the justification of the Supreme Court then be that this lack of separation of church and state is awright long as its in English? If so .. they might intervene in some'a the requirements to also print Spanish on lots of legal documents and notices in the US of A. Can't have it both ways methinks. I think every state in the USA oughta do whut their citizens want .. this issue of whether or not a 2.5 ton statute of the Ten Commandments stays or goes oughta be decided by the Allybammer folks in a referendum .. if 51% of the voters say it can stay then it oughta stay .. if they say it goes then it oughta go. The 49% whut don't git whut they want might need to be reminded that this here is whut's called a Democracy (even though its really a Republic) and sometimes you gotta take the hit, suck it up and drive on. As for my personal feelings .. long as they don't interfere with the Life, Liberty or Property (and that includes the RIGHT .. not the GUARANTEE) that me and mine can pursue happiness .. then I'll go along with the majority. But we gotta see whut the majority thinks and it ain't none'a the danged Federal Gummit's business nohow. IF the majority decides in a manner that does violate the rights of others to get ahead and be equal then the Federal Gummit should (MUST) step in as the guarantor of the equal rights of American citizens .. but letting the Jews or Moslems or what ever other group have a statute expressing their FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS: " Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. " Then look at the TENTH AMENDMENT: " The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people. " I had to write this .. and sorta enjoyed it I did. I'm thinking it might be better if'n I keep my ol' dinasaur butt in Turkey cause if I come back to the USA I might be forced to be an activist of some issues. ;-p > Please read the ingredients of Pepsi and Coke. Soft drinks are one of the WORST insults you can do to your body. You are basically drinking a chemical broth with them. Rotting your teeth is only the beginning. Soft drinks wear down the kidneys, congest the liver (because the liver has to detox your body from all the *rap in the drink), leeches calcium from bone so it's the very worst thing for any woman concerned w/osteoporosis (and, unfortunately, we all must be concerned w/it), aggravates all inflammatory conditions of the bowel, skin, and joints, is loaded w/sugar which therefore contributes to our national disgrace regarding the rates of Adult Onset Diabetes and obesity. If you drink the sugar-free it's worse, as, the aspartame has devastating effects on the nervous system, which I'd be very happy to go into in another post, if y'all (if I may, Butch!) are interested. Be my guest .. I don't drink the crap anyway. I think that aside from water folks should drink only those drinks that're produced from fermentation or distillation and setch. And I think I oughta be able to git me a six-pak or a liter or a fifth in the state of Jawja on Sunday too .. I can buy that danged cola whut does all the stuff you done laid out above. Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
Guest guest
> Federal Gummit ain't s'posed to be telling the 50 INDEPENDENT and > AUTONOMOUS states > yeah but they do... Take a recent case here in California. We had passed a law that allowed the growth and use of Medical Mary Jane. Feds didn't like it so they arrested a dude that was legally growing it (according to state regs). THEN the the Feddie Judge supressed the information about him being legal from the Jurors so he was convicted. Only had to serve " aday " . But how much he had to serve t'wernt never the point... Guest guest
Hey Butch, I was asking your leave regarding the use of " Y'All. " You sure know your historical facts. It's really interesting to see how there isn't total separation of church and state in the US, although it's sure better than most of the rest of the world. And, even if there was a total separation, I think there'd be a trickle down effect from the overlying patriarchal/christian belief system. Up here in Mass you can't buy liquor on Sunday either, but, if you want to drive up to NH, you can! And for those living by the border, it's up the street. Also, you can go to a restaurant and have a drink if you want to, so, what's the point of the Blue Laws anyway? I mean, I guess they want you to get drunk publicly on a Sunday, rather than in the privacy of your own home? I think it's really interesting that our money has " In God We Trust " on it. Here we have a complete joining of the sacred and the profane-I mean, what's more profane than money? So, why do we have 'in God we trust' on it? You just can't get away from it. On the plus side, though, I think the puritanical ethic of hard work has been what's launched the US to being where it is, ie, the only super power. And, I think this is the puritanical legacy that came w/the Prostetant puritans who came over in 1600s or so. I mean, for example, the Russians have such rampant alcoholism that the US business men who went over there after the collapse of the Soviet Union came home after a few months, because they got nothing done, because the people they thought they could do business with had enough vodka w/lunch each day that it precluded any business dealings. Recently, (on the radio) I heard a US soldier talking about being in Iraq, and complaining that it was the land of " In Sh'Allah " (I may not have the spelling right) meaning, " If Allah wills it " ,. meaning, it will happen if Allah wills it-meaning, they don't take much initiative. Just speculating. Of course, on the other hand, Romans ruled the world for a long time, and they certainly weren't secular. But, they also started the concept of the modern army, I think. Butch, you probably know more about this-but wasn't the Roman army the first army to have career soldiers? And then of course the British Empire ruled for a long time-they werent' secular either..... But, they sure spent a lot of years burning each other at the stake over religion. I think maybe Germany and Northern Europe may have a pretty good handle on the separation of church and state, though, from what I know from talking to people from those countries. Practicing Catholics in Germany pay a really big tax to belong to a church. From what I was told by a young German guy, many of the younger Germans just aren't practicing, because it just costs too much! Boy, I think I've lost the thread of my own argument! I guess what I mean is, even if you're an atheist, you are still deeply influenced by whatever are the overlying religious beliefs of the culture you live in.
