How I Hot Process - (Was RE:Therapeutic Value Of EO's In Soap)

HI Jennifer

 

Correct, I add my essential oils after I am done hot processing the

soap. Here's how I do it:

 

I make my soap like one would do CP .. in a pot adding the lye water to

melted oils, then stirring some and letting it sit some, then stirring

and letting it sit some, repeating that step over and over again until I

get a good trace. At that point I put a very low heat under the pot,

cover it and come back to stir it every few minutes until it reaches gel

stage. At that point I turn the heat off, let it sit for a little bit

with the cover on. That keeps it in a gel stage but lets it cool off a

little (that way I'm not just totally cooking off the EO as soon as I

add it). Then I add my EO - stir it in well and put it in the mold. It

sets up overnight and is ready to unmold and finish drying.

 

Only things I've noticed to be careful about - not starting the heat

before you get a good real trace - otherwise the oil and lye water all

separate in the pot and its just a mess to fix. Other thing is to not

let the soap get to hot (usually by forgetting to stir it).

Chris what hot process do you use? Do you hot process it without eo's

then

add them in another process later?

I do my soap in the oven, usually adding the essential oils right

before.

I'd love to hear of a method that will cut down on my use of essential

oils

and save on the properties too!

I think I'd like to try this! A couple of questions, if you don't mind:

1. About how much scent do you use per lb. of oils? I don't want to end up

using too much or too little as I experiment!

2. About how long can I expect the HP part to take, just so I can plan my

debotchery, LOL?
