Guest guest
Hi y'all, I meant to mention this in the previous post .. but I'm still a bit disturbed by what has gone down and was thinking of other things. As many of you know, the most commonly adulterated essential oils in the past were Melissa and Neroli. Too many folks have been caught playing games with those two products. It got so bad that many folks feared buying them .. though there was an abundant supply of the real thing .. it was just not something we could bargain for. This increase in price of Rose products .. seems to me it will give even more incentive to those who play games to play with the products. This is not something we need to fear when we buy from the still .. but many products are sold to brokers who then sell to major wholesalers and clearing houses. With some exceptions (France being one) there is where adulteration most often occurs. The further we get from the still the more chance we have of getting an adulterated product. It is not the small wholesalers or retailers we find on this and other aromatherapy lists who adulterate oils .. we don't have the knowledge or the proper set up to do this .. we're not chemists and we don't have labs. Plus I know the folks in this business and with few exceptions I trust them to not adulterate a product. But it makes it more critical for the small dealers to be wary when they buy their products for resell. How would they adulterate Rose Otto? By adding Phenyl ethyl alcohol. Some years back a person was offering Balkan (not Bulgarian) Rose Otto for a ridiculously low price .. I received a sample of it and it smelled like acetone .. like nail polish remover. When Martin Watt was visiting here I took him to meet Professor Baser and I took the Rose Otto sample. It was tested and came out close to 70% PEA. The supplier was NOT aware of this .. it had been tested .. by the company selling it to him!! I'm sure none of you have ever bought from this company .. they are unknown to most folks. How would they adulterate Rose Hydrosol? They would continue to do what they have been doing routinely with MANY hydrosols .. mixing them with distilled water. How can you tell the difference? With your nose!! I know of one company in Istanbul that routinely mixes Oregano Hydrosol with 50% distilled water. They are not doing it on the sly .. they say its too strong to be used straight. True it is .. but are they telling the major buyers that its mixed? I don't know .. and maybe the buyer doesn't care. But this year that company bought a large amount of Rose Hydrosol. I will NOT name the company as I am living here and it would be very reckless to do so. They are not selling direct to end users so it wouldn't mean much to you anyway. I will recommend that when buying Rose Hydrosol this year folks buy a small amount first .. check it out. Y'all keep smiling.
