Guest guest
Hello all. I want to cut some of the mint (growing wild{ly}) in my back yard. My question is how far from the ground should I cut the stems? I usually just go out an chop some of the plants down. This has been a good year for the mint and I want to 'harvest' most of it for my soap-making and the herbal bath bags. I plan to dry it on the stem so I know I will need a longer stem. Is there a better time of the day to do this cutting? I love plants and flowers, but do not have time to properly care for them so I let Nature do it. Could I distill these leaves and make mint water/mint EO? Like I sometimes make rose water? Thanks in advance. Guest guest
Hi Betty- I grow my own mint also (several different varieties). I cut mine in the morning, when they are nice and crisp from the cool evening. I also keep mine in large barrels so as to contain them as they can grow rampant. You can cut it close to the ground. I leave just about an inch from the ground. I also only cut the nice healthy stalks. After drying them, I strip off the leaves and discard the stems. I have never tried making my own EO from them although I love them in soaps, lotions, and other body product items ( not to mention a great cup of tea).
