What I heard/say is " Gag a maggot off a gut wagon. " A friend of mine's father

told me (after I expressed surprise that someone else said it) that it came

from the days when meat of some sort was being carted about on wagons and dogs

would climb up and eat until they puked... GAG!

Cheers!

Hey Debbie,

I know a few Yankees who speak pretty fair American. ;-p

Isn't McDuffie Scottish? If it is, the odds of finding a Scottish Yank

back in the early days of America was much like trying to find an honest

politican today. ;-p

Most came as British Regiments .. were settled in the KY-TN area in

lonely outposts and sorta left to rot. As they had a warrior mentality

that was quickly identified by the Cherokee they were immediately and

totally accepted by them. And they married into the Cherokee tribes.

Matter of historical fact is it that those who made the trek on the

Trail of Tears were something like 20% mixed blood and were married to

Scots .. the Scots did not forced to move but they elected to forfiet

their lands and go with their families.

But .. I'm sure many Scots migrated to the north in time .. most of the

Irish and Welsh stayed in the north .. except for those who became

soldiers and later settled in the west. During the time of the Indian

Wars the majority of the American soldiers spoke no English .. they

spoke Irish, Scottish and German. Noncoms were those who could speak

English and kick the most butt .. interesting it was.

So .. likely it is that the majority of us have a bit of American Indian

blood in our backgound .. and a bit of Scottish, a bit of German and

maybe some of the Blarney Stone too. ;-p

Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com

PS: Christy .. until General Fremont came along most of the folks in

Suthran California spoke Comanche, Apache, sub-dialects of Mayan and

Inca, a half dozen other minor Indian tongues .. and Mexicano. ;-p

Ah, McDuffee is my married name! My grandmother was actually French

Canadian, so my dad, who spent all of his life here in Massachusetts,

actually grew up in a bilingual household. Still says " gag a maggot "

though!

My Scottish in-laws have been here for generations, not sure how many, but

before that, they have traced it to Ireland, and then back to Scotland.

Interesting stuff!
