I wonder if YL is going to buy up the whole harvest like they did with the

Lavender, so that the only rose one will be able to acquire is extremely

diluted, poor quality rose AND if all the Bulgarian and Turkish Rose stock is

dying

off but thanks to YL (or more specifically GY) and their own private root stock

they'll be able to save the world!

ROFLMAO ROFLMAO ROFLMAO ROFLMAO ROFLMAO ROFLMAO

Let's face it, I have a sick sense of humor!

Back to my little hole in the ground.

Cheers!

Hi y'all,

A while back I wrote the list and said the 2002 Rose Otto crop would not

likely stretch till the 2003 crop was harvested and distilled. Mayhaps

some folks thought I was overly concerned cause it had never happened

before. Well, I was right ... it is not OUT OF STOCK. I just got off

the phone with the distillers .. I was arranging my trip to the Rose

Fields around mid-June. And I had intended to reorder .. but no luck.

Last year was the first year I had to sell Rose Otto produced in the

same year I sold it. Prior to that, I always sold Rose Otto that was at

least a year old .. and as you know, it does improve with age.

But .. last year Bulgaria produced less than they normally do .. twas

due to bad weather and some other factors .. and they raised their price

a lot .. so the perfumeries that had normally been getting Rose Otto

from both Bulgaria and Turkey descended on the Turkish producers and

bought out the remaining 2001 crop of Rose Otto.

The Rose Harvest and Distillation here in Turkey begins next week .. it

looks like the crop this year will not be as large as last year. This

is because many of the fields on the edge of town were sold to housing

developers .. Isparta has a new university, which created a new housing

requirement .. and few farmers could afford to not sell their land for

the prices offered. Many of those away from town have picked up the

slack and planted new Rose Fields this year .. but they'll not produce

in any volume until next year.

Its likely that they will produce 1,500 kilograms or so .. and likely

that this amount will NOT last till the 2004 harvest and distillation.

I'm not sure how its going in Bulgaria now .. haven't gotten the word

from any reliable sources yet. But I can't imagine them lowering their

prices because they too rarely produce enough to last from year to year

They produce far less than Turkey does and both countries will sell all

they have without trying.

Also .. its likely the Turks will raise prices this year. If I were a

producer and my product was selling out before I could replenish it I

would raise prices. In the last 10 years Turkish Rose Otto prices have

increased but 10% .. that's in the face of monstrous inflation and a

very high fluctuation in the exchange rate. So odds of price increase

are better than 50/50.

If you're sitting on Rose Otto now be happy .. if not, you can join me

in my frustration. :-(

But still .. we gotta try to keep smiling. :-)
