OT Amphora ** Was: Essendulum

Hey y'all,

Here's a few of them. http://www.AV-AT.com/stuff/bodrum2.html

Those shown about are ancient .. but all along the Aegean Coast ..

around Izmir, I've photographed many hundreds of them on the ocean floor

... generally Greek and Turkish and maybe a thousand or more years old -

not as stylish as the ones shown in the URL above. Ships often ran

aground in that rough area. Amphora were the common vessels for

transporting liquids then and the trade in olive and other oil

was a mainstay of the Mediterranean countries.

The amphora remain where they are because the penalities for bringing

one up are too great .. and their value is too small to take the risk.

There are still many ancient cities to be excavated in Turkey .. they

can't get to all of them in the next 1,000 years. Example - 3 years ago

Ephesus celebrated the 100th anniversary of organized diggings there ..

Ephesus is a magnificent place to visit .. Ephesus

is only 10% excavated. :-)
