Hi Carol,

Sorry for the quick reply before but I was running out the door and

thought I'd be out a while .. I was wrong. Bet most folks like the

short reply as I'm not known for them. ;-p

> I did a quick Google search on huile de laurier. Every single hit was in

Was in French cause it means Oil of Laurel .. and it is Bay Laurel.

> although the use of a high percentage of EO in a soap would certainly

> be problematic in regards to safety.

Not sure what high is but Laurus nobilis has tested pretty safe for

dermal application.

" A 10% solution of Laurel oil caused no irritation or sensitization on

humans. " Epstein & Kligman 1975. Report to the R.I.F.M.

This type information is found in the safety manual " Plant Aromatics. "

http://www.AV-AT.com/plantaromaticsavnp.html

But even if it were only 4% I doubt it would matter much in soap as its

not left on long .. unless someone used it twice a day every day for a

long time. Even then it would not be all that dangerous as its not a

known sensitizer for folks with normal skin or other sensitivities.

> On one of the soap pages I read, the bay oil is supposed to give the

> soap a green color. I don't want to think about how much EO that

It might .. then they might be talking about the Bay Laurel Seed Oil.

But its not a matter of guesswork if you own Plant Aromatics. ;-p

> >From what I read, it translates to " oil of bay-tree " , which could

> mean it's an infused oil of some sort. Can't say for sure because the

Hard to say with French .. they are not all that logical to begin with

methinks. ;-9 But when we tawk about Bays we gotta be careful to know

if its Bay, Laurel (Laurus nobilis) or Bay, West Indies .. which is also

commonly but mistakenly called Bay Rum (Pimenta racemosa).

Turkey produces something like 98% of the Bay Laurel in the world .. on

the Med Coast with some along the Black Sea Coast .. wanna see it?

http://www.av-at.com/stuff/aromaticplants.html

Its the typical Bay Leaf we use for cooking .. so its not toxic.

> According to the info I read, it's also used in equine care .. oiling

> the hoofs to promote growth and as a part of a liniment for

> rheumatism.

Mayhaps .. but so is mud and bear fat. Serious I am .. I'm in the

middle of Hanta Yo now .. fantastic book on the Lakota.

> Maybe it is the EO, which would help explain him saying it's very

> expensive,

Jeez .. I get $48 a pound for it. That's not expensive.

> however we know that infused oils can also provide many benefits to

> what we add it to, and we know that the cost of many infused oils we

> can purchase from suppliers is not always inexpensive.

Many infused oils will cost you more than the EO because its FAR more

labor intensive .. but .. after an EO goes through forty-eleven middle

folks it can be costly .. I am THE source for Turkish Origin oils. ;-p

Thankee m'am but you give me too much credit. I'm not sure if I know or

not .. but told what I think I know. :-)

Hi Butch,

> Was in French cause it means Oil of Laurel .. and it is Bay Laurel.

That much I was sure of. What I wasn't sure of was whether it was referring

to the essential oil, an infused oil, or what ... which you kindly provided

info on the seed oil.

> Not sure what high is but Laurus nobilis has tested pretty safe for

True enough. At 10% of the oil weight in a batch of soap, that comes to 1.6

ounces of EO. I typically use EOs at .5 ounce per pound of oils. More than

that can cause some EOs to be overpowering. But since I did find reference

to the Bay Oil giving soap a green color, it would have to be a usage rate

of more than 1.6 ounces per pound of oils. I've never seen Bay EO give any

sort of greenish tint to soap, not even when I combined it with Rosemary EO,

so I'm thinking it would have to be a very significant amount of EO to

produce that effect. Makes more sense that the greenish color would come

from the seed oil.

> But its not a matter of guesswork if you own Plant Aromatics. ;-p

I own it. Just haven't gotten to do any reading in it yet. :-( And

because I just got it, it never entered my mind to look in it for any info

in relation to Jody's question. Have to get it fixed in my mind that I do

own it now, and to go look up info in it.

> Jeez .. I get $48 a pound for it. That's not expensive.

Just remember, Butch, expensive is all in the " eyes " of one's bank account.

Don't know about your bank, but ours doesn't take very kindly us trying to

write checks for more than we have in the account. *g*

> I am THE source for Turkish Origin oils. ;-p

So I noticed, and one of these days I'm going to be ordering some. Right

now I have to prioritize what I want because I can't get everything. Would

if I could.

> Thankee m'am but you give me too much credit. I'm not sure if I know or

> not .. but told what I think I know. :-)

You're welcome. I don't think I'm giving you too much credit, and I'm sure

others here will agree with me. I had no idea Bay Seed Oil existed until

you mentioned it because it didn't turn up in any of my Goggle searching. I

think you have provided the information Jody was looking for.
