Guest guest
Hey Chris- Just a little comment on this- There has been discussion on another list I am on about herbal treatment of SARS- and Butterfly Weed has come up several times(Asclepias tuberosa) Not your average herb....truly an herb that deserves more attention...also known as Pleurisy root... I am a big fan of Echinacea as well- and I use purperea and angustifolia- please make sure you use cultivated, organic Echinacea- the wild stands are suffering from overharvest(as with just about anything that is harvested for the root) The way to take Echinacea tincture is " hard and fast " - like a dropperfiul every hour (or more!) in the acute phase- then slowly going down to 3xday for several days...a one ounce bottle is not going to cut it! I always keep about 8 oz on hand, and replace as necessary... Now about Goldenseal- taking that at the first sign of infection is not worth using the plant at all- Goldenseal is more specific for *thick* mucus- in the head, GI tract; it is excellent for cleaning out mucous membranes - and turning green mucus to healthy , clear mucus... Heres one by Paul Bergner on Goldenseal and the common cold- http://www.medherb.com/84.HTM#Goldenseal%20and%20the%20common%20cold:%20The%20an\ tibiotic Heres one by Howie Brounstein on using Oregon Grape instead.... http://www.ibiblio.org/herbmed/neat-stuff/hydrasti.html and when you do NEED Goldenseal- *please* make sure it is cultivated! May you enjoy health! Michelle
Guest guest
Thanks for the great Goldenseal (and Grape Root) info m'lady .. and yes I really should have clarified that I use it only when the cold starts off with green snots (sinus infection) and when other signs of established infection are present, not just average sniffles/malaise And yep, I do agree - there are so many wild herbs now being over harvested - we have to be careful of our sources. Herbs for Kids has Oregon Grape Root in their formulas instead of Goldenseal. And I have to read more about butterfly weed/pleurisy now! You've sparked my curiosity. Thank you again Michelle (our resident herbalist *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com Michelle Morton-niyama [lakshmi] Tuesday, April 01, 2003 4:57 PM Goldenseal/SARS etc....
