Guest guest
Howdy folks, I am itching to do ANYTHING that isn't child related these days (even just for a few minutes *LOL* and that means I am going to play around with making soap again this weekend while the boys are napping - YAY! Last time I made liquid soap, and some " gel " I used fruit pectin to thicken it up .. and while that worked nicely at first .. I've noticed that the little bit of gel that I still have from that has thinned out a bit ... kinda like how jelly can sometimes get a bit watery after being opened .. ya know what I mean? So this time I am going to experiment with xanthan gum as my thickening agent. Has anyone else had success with other things to thicken liquid soap into gel (aside from just not diluting it so much in the first place)? I've heard some folks use gelatin, but I am trying to keep it a vegetarian product (I'm not a vegetarian, but I know lots of customers are). Thanks for any input and ideas! Have a great weekend folks! *Smile* Chris (list mom - still under lots of snow in Colorado) http://www.alittleolfactory.com
Guest guest
Hi Chris, Do you have Catherine Failors liquid soap book? I made her recipe for sudsy fun shampoo on page 65. When I used the borax as the neutrilizer it thickened the soap to the consistency of a gel. And it didn't take much at all. With another recipe, the Castor Oil-Jojoba Moisturizing Soap on page 54 did not do the same thing. I tried using Xanthan to thicken it but really didn't have any luck. It kinda sunk to the bottom rather than suspend and thicken. Not sure what happened there. She says in her book that the thickening with borax happens more so in the recipes with a high content on soft oils. I used Sweet Almond instead of the olive. I did dilute it alot too, and it still thickened up nicely. Have fun this weekend soaping!
