Metric System .. A Perfect System ** Was: Amounts in ml's - Don't know how to figure them

Lotsa happenings is right ! I'm a little perturbed by all these so-called do

gooders, though. Don't they know what they are asking for here ? Well, Bush is

standing his ground anyway. I fear it won't be long now. I also think I see

S.H. realizing he's in big trouble and knowing what's going to happen if he

doesn't do something " slightly " intelligent. It really made me mad when I heard

he went sniveling to the pope. Anything to keep from giving it all up,

information that he should be giving up, that is. When a bully can't bully,

then sniveling is what he goes t next. He has no soul. When I look in his

eyes, whenever I'm lucky that is, there is nothing in them. Nothing at all.

I'd best stop here.

No, you didn't confuse me at all. I'll keep this post though, to refer back to

for memory lapses till I get used to it all. You make one heck of a math

teacher Butch. I'm impressed and believe me, math wasn't my best subject ! I

thank you most sincerely.

In Peace, maybe, maybe not, as long as it ends up in freedom for all.

Jenn

Hi Butch

Just to show you that I read your messages thoroughly! - I need to add some

comments to your list of weights and measures :)

>Liquid Measure: 1 Liter = 1,000 milliliters

> 1 fluid ounce = 29.573 milliliters

> 1 pint ...... = 0.473 liter

> 1 quart ..... = 0.946 liter

> 1 gallon .... = 3.785 liters

Just to confuse matter further, the above only applies to the USA; here in the

UK our pints are bigger (0.568 litres), and so therefore are our gallons

(usually referred to as imperial gallons to distinguish them from the US

gallons) at 4.545 litres.

>Avoirdupois Weight: This involves:

> Grains .. used, for example, in weighing gunpowder .. even in the USA.

> Drams .. normally used for medicines and perfumes .. and other things.

> Pounds and ounces .. no explanation required.

> Stones .. only in Britain .. means 14 pounds.

> Tons .. which is 2,000 pounds

Except, of course, here in the UK, where a ton is 2240 pounds.

Wouldn't life be so much easier if we all did it the same!!! The UK resisted

metric measures for so long, (some of us still resist it!) then in, I think,

the 1970's we moved to metrication. I still think in pounds and ounces, inches

and feet, pints and gallons but we have to buy everything in grams and kilos,

centimetres and metres, and litres :)

Just more figures to confuse everyone!!! - I too will keep your conversion table

for when I'm buying on line - thanks :)

Be well

Regards

Ann

Hey Jenn,

> I have a question, Butch, my educator ! By the way, I watch CNN all

> day long now, lol.

Good show .. lotsa happenings going down now - huh? ;-p

> My question is: how in the world am I supposed to know what the

> metric? measurements are ? I dont know ml's and the like.

Tis a lot easier than the American and British systems it is. All the

weights and measures are based on units, tens, hundreds and thousands.

But what is it you wish to do .. or why are you asking the question? If

you simply want to know how many whats make a who .. the answer is as

follows, and keep in mind that the below list is about Liquid Measure;

it is NOT about Weight .. in order to understand Metrics you gotta make

sure to not get weights and measures confused ... like nobody confuses

pounds and ounces with inches or feet - huh?

Liquid Measure: 1 Liter = 1,000 milliliters

1 fluid ounce = 29.573 milliliters

1 pint ...... = 0.473 liter

1 quart ..... = 0.946 liter

1 gallon .... = 3.785 liters

REMEMBER .. the above is Liquid Measure .. not weight .. so a fluid oz

of water or a fluid oz of molten lead will fill the same space .. you

can put 5 ml or each in a 5 ml bottle .. they fit well. But they

sho'nuf won't weigh the same - huh?

So .. liters (1,000 milliliters) is a measure .. not a weight.

Avoirdupois Weight: This involves:

Grains .. used, for example, in weighing gunpowder .. even in the USA.

Drams .. normally used for medicines and perfumes .. and other things.

Pounds and ounces .. no explanation required.

Stones .. only in Britain .. means 14 pounds.

Tons .. which is 2,000 pounds

Metric tons .. which is roughly 2,205 pounds.

Metric Weights .. most commonly used units are grams, kilograms, tons.

1 metric ton is 1,000 kilograms

1 kilogram is 1,000 grams .. or .. roughly 2.205 pounds

At least a couple of times a week someone asks me how many milliliters

are in a gram or vice versa .. they are confusing measures with weights.

Its NOT impossible to answer IF we know the exact density of the liquid

we are trying to convert .. but its not something folks need to do in

the second place.

If you ask me the above question and you are referring to FRESH water

(H2O) .. not seawater .. the answer is One to One .. because a gram or a

ml or water is the same .. as is a liter or a kilogram .. but water is

unique and probably the only liquid in this category .. and it is the

liquid that is used to develop the standard for density .. it has been

assigned a factor of " 1 " .. all other liquids are plus or minus 1 ..

meaning they are heavier or lighter than water.

But all the above is only for those who want to know more about metrics.

All you really need to know is the below .. at least for essential oils:

1 Avoir ounce = 28.35 grams (gr)

1 Fluid ounce = 29.573 milliliters (ml)

1 Kilogram .. = 1,000 grams .. or .. roughly 2.205 pounds.

1 Liter ..... = 1,000 milliliters

And .. 1 decagram = 5.64 drams. Just Kidding .. forget that one. ;-p

International trade in essential oils and other liquids like olive oil,

etc., is always in grams, kilograms and metric tons .. period.

Retail sizes for essential oils .. in the USA .. are normally in ounces

(which might be Avoir or might be fluid .. you gotta ask if they don't

say) .. or in milliliters.

Wholesale sizes for essential oils are normally in ounces (same problem

exists), pounds or kilograms.

BUT .. in the rest of the world .. they are either milliliters & liters,

which you KNOW is a measure .. or in grams & kilograms .. which you KNOW

is a weight.

> Help ! Jenn in Or

Did I help .. or did I confuse you? If you are confused .. then ask

specific questions and I'll address them .. but now I'm trying to get

y'all to eat the whole elephant with one bite and it ain't easy. :-(

Y'all keep smiling, Butch http://www.AV-AT.com

PS: Last post of the night cause its a bit after 1 o'clock here and I'm

gonna take off early. ;-) I have some posts from some of you .. didn't

answer yet but didn't forget you .. so whilst you're sleeping in the

morning, I'll be answering you. And Wintergreen too. ;-p
