Hi

I have a question for all knowledgeable herb people:

When I prescribe formulas including the herb Ren shen (for example Ba

zhen tang), I often find that several patients will get a light headache

the first days. Is this something that anyone else has any knowledge

about and why?

Thanks!

Carl,

RenShen will natuarally have an " uplifting " effect due to being a

Qi Tonic, and being slightly warm. It strongly tonifies the orignial

Qi (Yuan Qi). The problem with the Headaches may be due to an

unforeseen underlying condition. For example, if there is a

history of Hypertension, or other " excess " conditions that could

contribute to Ren Shen having this sort of effect.

According to Bensky, Materia medica; overdosing of RenShen

can cause headaches. I generally use Ren Shen for conditions

of real depletion, in fact my colleague and i were just discussing

the problem with practitioners over-tonifying people. I find most

patients in the western world, due to diet etc., have some sort of

excess syndrome accompanied by a deficient one.

If you could give us some more info. on the particular patients

you were prescribing Ren Shen too, that may help.

Good Luck,
