Hi All, & Nick,

Many thanks for the note on Betel Nut.

Areca was one of the treatments recommended when we were learning

Pharmacology in 2nd year vet school (1960). Another was Rx

Dryopteridis Felix mas (Guanzhong). As I have not used herbal med to

treat tapeworm infestation, I can only comment by hearsay, or by a

search of Medline.

A Medline search fpr the profile (herbal OR decoction OR infusion OR

powder OR herbs OR phyto* OR kampo OR areca OR arecae OR

betel) AND (tapeworm* OR tape-worm* OR solium OR taenia*) AND

(efficac* OR effective*) produced 5 useful hits.

Zhong Xi Yi Jie He Xue Bao. 2003 May;1(1):32-4. [Clinical study

and electron microscope observation of tapeworm scolices on 548

cases of taeniasis treated with Binlang Chengqi Decoction] [Article in

Chinese] Chen ZS, Jia DB, Sun QL, Zhou LJ, Li CL, Yan H, Li CJ,

Wang YG, Wang YH, Nie ZW. Department of Traditional Chinese

Medicine, 211th Hospital of People's Liberation Army, Haerbin,

Heilongjiang Province 150080, China. Objective To observe the effect

and mechanism of Chinese herbs in the treatment of taeniasis. Methods

Five hundred and forty-eight cases of taeniasis were treated with

Binlang Chengqi Decoction (BLCQD). The tapeworm scolices of ten

cases were observed by electron microscope (EM). Results Among the

548 cases, 521 cases were cured and 27 cases were improved. The

total effective rate was 100%. Foam-like secretion in the sucker of the

tapeworm scolices and erosion of the epithelium in the cervical part

were observed by scanning electron microscope. Observed by

transmission electron microscope, the cortex was seriously damaged.

The microvilli were exfoliated. The cells in the muscle layer and

parenchyma layer were injured in various degrees. The mitochondria

were tumefied or caved. And the nerve cord was damaged. Conclusion

BLCQD can not only paralyze the tapeworm scolex, but also injury the

cells of the tapeworm scolex. PMID: 15339610 [PubMed - in process]

Anthelmintic efficacy of Flemingia vestita (Fabaceae): alteration in the

activities of some glycolytic enzymes in the cestode, Raillietina

echinobothrida. Das B, Tandon V, Saha N. Department of Zoology,

North-eastern Hill University, Shillong, India. The crude root-peel

extract of Flemingia vestita, genistein and praziquantel were tested

against some selected glycolytic enzymes--hexokinase (HK),

phosphofructokinase (PFK), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase

(PEPCK), pyruvate kinase (PK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), malate

dehydrogenase (MDH) and malic enzyme (ME)--of the fowl tape worm,

Raillietina echinobothrida. Following exposure to the various treatments,

the activities of HK, PFK, PEPCK and LDH increased by 33-39%, 41-

125%, 44-49% and 55-67%, respectively, and that of PK decreased by

14-26% in the parasite at the time of paralysis. The MDH and ME

activities of the tissue homogenate were also found to be higher by 22-

43% and 28-59%, respectively, in the treatments. However, whereas the

activity of both cytosolic and mitochondrial MDH increased by 33-58%

and 43-73%, respectively, the cytosolic ME activity showed an increase

of 33-39%, and there was no significant enhancement in the

mitochondrial ME activity. Histochemically, the enhancement in the

activities of HK, LDH and MDH was clearly discernible. The enhanced

glycolytic activity seems to be a function of anthelmintic stress caused

by the phytochemicals. Copyright 2004 Springer-Verlag PMID:

J Ethnopharmacol. 1995 Jan;45(1):27-33. Ethiopian traditional herbal

drugs. Part I: Studies on the toxicity and therapeutic activity of local

taenicidal medications. Desta B. School of Pharmacy, Addis Ababa

University, Ethiopia. The quantitative toxicities of 33 taenicidal herbal

drugs are presented, expressed as their intraperitoneal LD50 values in

mice and their respective median effective oral dose and worm

expulsion time in humans. Rank orders of toxicity, taenicidal potency

and worm expulsion time of the herbal medications are indicated along

with a discussion of their respective therapeutic merits and untoward

effects. On the basis of considerations of lower toxicity, higher potency

and shorter worm expulsion time, the taenicidal herbal medications are

arranged in decreasing rank order of preference. Other therapeutic uses

of the herbs are also presented and discussed. PMID: 7739224

Med Parazitol (Mosk). 1991 Sep-Oct;(5):49-52. [The anticestodal activity

of preparations made from the breadfruit] [Article in Russian] Rasfon K.

Breadfruit tree (Artocarpus tonkinensis) is used in Laotian folk medicine

for the treatment of taeniasis. Breadfruit tree preparations impair in vitro

the motility of the cestodes Hymenolepis nana causing their motor

excitation, contracture and death. The latter is observed when fairly high

concentrations of the preparations (10(-2) = 2.10(-3)) are used. In mice

experimentally invaded by H. nana it was shown that the water

extraction of breadfruit tree substance is rather less effective than its

ethanol extraction and has some purgative action, which increases the

therapeutic effect. PMID: 1758366 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

5.Treatment of Taenia saginata infection with mixture of areca nuts and

pumpkin seeds. Chung WC, Ko BC. In January and February 1974, 32

adults (20 males and 12 females) and a 13-year-old girl with taeniasis

saginata were treated with the mixture of boiled areca nuts and pumpkin

seeds at Mastoban, Jen-ai District, Nantou County, Taiwan. A total of 48

worms including 42 scolices were recovered from 29 cases. Side-

effects were observed in 4 cases including 3 with complaints of

dizziness, tinnitus, nausea and vomiting, and one with coma and

abdominal pain. Mixtures of 75-150 g areca nuts and 50-100 g pumpkin

seeds were judged effective and safe. PMID: 1036985 [PubMed -
