Guest guest
Does anyone know about acupuncturists in New Mexico: What is their license--the national or a separate state license? If state, what are the numbers of hours (approx) of training required? Are herbs included? Do people practice as 'primary care?' Any general info of this sort would be appreciated. I practice in California. thanks, Marian

Guest guest
I trained in Albuquerque New Mexico. They have their own state test (about $1000 which is a practical), as well as requiring NCCAOM tests both acupuncture and herbs. NM does allow OM's to be primary care doctors, but I don't know anyone that actually takes on that kind of responsibility personally (of the few dozen OM Doc's I know there). Santa Fe is insanely over-saturated with almost 1 acupuncturist for every 600 people. Albuquerque is much better with about 1 to 2000, but still a pretty large number if you ask me. Of course on the flip side, you don't need to sell what OM can do there. Everybody knows about it and believes in it, even the Western MD's. That's a huge plus even if you have a lot of competition. There are towns in NM that have few acupuncturists that have a lot of opportunity I think. I grew up in NM spending the first 18 years of my life in Santa Fe and then 4 years of college in Las Cruces. Then I returned to NM to study acupuncture from 2001 until last December. I know the State well, but chose to open my practice in Arizona for many reasons which I would be happy to share if you wish. Best of luck! Christopher Vedeler L.Ac., C.Ht. Guest guest
There is a separate state license (DOM), but it is based on the national exam. Herbs are included, the license is primary care, and they are very relaxed about schools and hours (national standards again). I've had a license there since 1983, since lapsed a few years ago. Guest guest
The last I heard..about 4 years ago, a LAc. in N.M. could even pronounce a person dead. I believe there may be another state or two which allow that also. Don't hold me 100% on that though. It could have been a rumor. Guest guest
Chris, There seems to be a tendency for the term primarycare to refer to usage as an HMO term (gatekeeper) instead of its usage as a practitioner who treats without relying on MD referral. These are separate issues and need clarifying. Each state has its own difinition but most acupuncture legislation now reflects independent provider status. Mike W.
