Guest guest
I have a patient who just got an IUD (hormone-free variety) and wants to be treated for heavy menstrual bleeding and cramps. Age:19, Pulse: deep, thin, slippery on L, wiry & choppy on R. Tongue: swollen, pink, thick white greasy coat. Hx of fibrocystic breasts, constipation, oral contraceptives. Can you treat IUD-related bleeding & cramps? Should it be viewed as bleeding from blood stasis? It seems like an insult to the body, but I wonder if anyon has had luck in managing these side-effects with herbs. -Ben Hawes

Haemostat herbs/formulas nay give some relief, but IF the primary CAUSE of the bleeding is " foreign body trauma " , my gut would say get the IUD out fast and use another method of contraception. Guest guest
Z'ev, The precise mechanism of action is unknown - But I do not think they act on spontaneously aborting the fetus. The copper IUD, IMO, is quite fascinating- no hormones involved. Possible mechanisms of action are: 1)creates changes in the cervical mucous. 2)creates chronic inflammatory changes in the endometrium and fallopian tubes (which have spermicidal effects and inhibit fertilization and implantation. 3) thinning and glandular atrophy of the endometrium, which inhibits implantation. 4) direct ovicidal effects The inflammatory reaction - When the uterus is exposed to a foreign body, a sterile inflammatory reaction occurs that is toxic to sperm and ova and prevents implantation. This is what originally spawned my question. It seems like such a response with someone who has a history of endometriosis and inflammation issues might not do well with such a device. Hope this helps, -Jason > > > On Behalf Of > Tuesday, November 15, 2005 8:57 AM > > Re: Slide shows > > Cara, > Does the IUD prevent conception by spontaneously aborting new > fetuses? Guest guest
I noticed in the Gynae dept. in china (as IUD's are very common birth control there), that alot of women complained of severe dysmenorrhoea and heavier periods, even shortened cycles with excessive bleeding after having an IUD inserted, and not just in the short term after insertion, often they experienced this for years until finally having them removed. Oh, one other thing that I noticed in China, is that if you dont removed the IUD at menopause, and the uterus atrophies, as it does, then the IUD is yours for keeps. Apart from that, I dont really know about the safety of using IUD's these days. Hopefully the have come along way since the " copper 7 " that was causing so many problems. Its doesnt really seem to be a popular method of birth control here in Australia.
