Do You Believe in The Yellow Emperor?: Exploring the Roots of Chinese

Medicine (3 CEUs)

Friday 9:00am-12:00pm

Answers to questions about the roots of Chinese medicine come from two

different sources: Folk legends and scholarly historians. Unfortunately, these

two sources are at odds with each other leading some to proclaim acupuncture,

for example, to be 5,000 years old while others insist it cannot be much more

than 2,000 years old. Is there a way to reconcile folk legends with scholarly

history or must one of these be proven wrong if the other is to be accepted?

In this talk author, Licensed Acupuncturists, and long time student of

Taoist folk history, Matthew Bauer, offers theories on how these two views of

history may be compatible after all. Having spent more than 10 years researching

Taoist folk legends, archeology, and modern scholarly history, Mr. Bauer

contends that the key to understanding Chinese medical theories lies in ancient

astronomy - the quest to understand the movement of the heavenly spheres - and

the role that quest played in the evolution of early advanced civilizations.

While the highlights of his theories are discussed in his just released

book, " The Healing Power of Acupressure and Acupuncture: A complete Guide to

Timeless Traditions and Modern Practice " , the more specific details were edited

from this book as they were deemed by the publisher to be " too deep " for a

general public readership. This talk will consider those details including how

the legends of Fu Hsi, Shen Nung, and the Yellow Emperor may depict actual

events in early Chinese culture relating to the transition from Hunter-Gathers

to Herder-Cultivators and then advanced civilization.

If you have ever wondered about the roots of Chinese medicine or what to

make of the ancient legends, you won't want to miss this provocative talk by an

acupuncturist and Taoist who has spent much of his nearly 20 years of practice

looking for answers to these questions.

Putting It Into Perspective (1.5 CEUs)

Sunday 9:00am-10:30am

Many prospective acupuncture and Oriental medicine patients want to know

how many treatments they may need, how certain the results will be, and how

exactly the treatments work. Often, these questions are not easy to answer as so

many factors can influence outcomes and Oriental medical theories are based on

concepts foreign to most Westerners. This talk will seek to put the practice of

Oriental medicine into a perspective any patient can follow and give answers to

the most commonly asked questions by taking a step back and recognizing the very

different approach acupuncture and most of Oriental medicine takes as compared

to western medicine. A side by side comparison of the strengths and weaknesses

of both systems will be considered, making discussions about treatment outcomes

easier for both the healer and their patients.
