HI Group, sorry, another slightly daft question this time, as I only get

started with the chinese herbs I am not too sure about it, so hope someone would

not mind giving me a bit of info!

What is the difference in content between the new Bensky-Chinese herbal

Medicine-Formulas and strategies, and Materia medica, To look up formulas, does

one need the former or is everything in the latter too? Many thanks, Andrea

One has formulas and the other has individual herbs.

if i'm understanding your question correctly the difference is that Materia

Medica focuses

on the study of individual medicinal substances where Formulas and Strategies

focuses on

the study of formulas (which are composed of individual medicinal substances).

you can look up formulas in the Formulas and Strategies. Materia Medica does

not contain

formulas, though it does contain combinations of medicinal substances, which are

building blocks of formulas.

to really understand Chinese herbal medicine, you need to study both.

Hi Andrea!

Get both, open them up on a *big* table and study for months, years, the

rest of your life even. The information in the materia medica is about

the ingredients, the information in the formula book is how the

ingredients work together.

Regards,

Pete

Preferably with a teacher. You need proper training to practice

Chinese herbal medicine.
