Guest guest
Hi All, One of my formerly infertile, now pregnant clients is getting close to her due date and I was wondering if there are any general things I should keep in mind about treating her. For instance, should I start using points that assist with delivery at some point soon? Her doctor said that she would induce labor if she hasn't delivered by the 39th week. Also, I don't know if there are any general things I should keep in mind for post delivery. Her symptoms before and after conception have always been related to yin deficiency most of all, but there is also some dampheat and blood stagnation. Always very weak pulses, yet she has always had energy--seemingly blood stagnation and/or yin deficient energy. Perhaps it is all dependent on the individual and I should just treat what I see, but I wanted to check and see if there was something that I " should " know since this is the first woman that I've worked with who is about to deliver. Guest guest
There was an article in the previous journal of chinese medicine by debra betts, on pre-birth treatment. You can download the pdf version at: http://www.jcm.co.uk/SampleArticles.phtml I used it on 2 of my patients adding a few points according to other sign and symptoms they had, for the 3 weeks before the delivery and in both cases the delivery for a first baby was fast and with no complications. Also to show the patient and their partners acupressure points (GB 21, BL 32, GB30, Kid 1 etc...) they can use during delivery for mainly the pain showed to be of great use both to provide a better birth experience and as a way to involve their partners in the birth process. Hope that helps. Guest guest
Hi Laura, I am no expert in pregnancy, having had just a few opportunity to help women overdue with high blood pressure or with lower back pain near due date. However, here are my reactions / thoughts. Full term is not 39 weeks. First babies can take more weeks than 41 some times 43 weeks. If her doctor has decided to take charge, assumable with her consent, then trying to induce the baby sooner with acupuncture, would not make sense to me if that was your meaning. Supporting her Yin sounds like a good idea, and could form a root treatment, whenever. You may want to look at potential symptomatic treatment now in preparation; ie lactating, post natal depression, recovery from vaginal tear and or pelvic pain, treatment for C section if they go that way. My kinesiologist helped his daughter to birth in 20 minutes, using Ren 12 and Pe 1 to control the oxytocin mechanism. One of my teachers who works a lot with pregnant women, will direct moxa Sp 6 until the baby arrives. He has hospital privileges. Guest guest
Hi all, thank you so much for the responses. My patient's doctor said she would induce labor at 39 weeks...not sure why so early, but my patient is all for it, so I don't have a lot of say. When she told me she had this look on her face like, " Don't you dare tell me not to do this! " . Thanks for the wonderful article and also the great ideas sent from everyone. This is such a great forum. Any idea whether moxa or needling Sp 6 is a better idea at this point pre-birth (the article might clarify, I've only skimmed it so far)? If needling, I'm thinking a more even or even moving technique would be better than the usual tonifying technique I use on Sp 6. I wonder about having her moxa Sp 6 each night for the last couple weeks before she is due?
