Guest guest
A patient yesterday told me that she has a difficult time taking multi vitamins. They make her very drowsy. Her previous LAc apparently told her that vitamins produce too much heat in her system. Does anyone have an explanation of why that would be? How do we classfify vitamins in TCM? Holly Holly N. Guest guest
Vitamins are refined substances extracted largely from foods. They are considered to be high in qi, very active, yang and hot in nature, and low in wei, flavor or substance which is more yin and cold in nature. Therefore they can create excess heat by overstimulating the body, and because they lack crude fiber and complexity, can overtax the body's qi transformation producing damp heat. Unless one is specifically using mega-vitamin therapy for specific medical conditions, one should be cautious not to overdo it with vitamin supplements. Guest guest
The tab itself is very little on MV and a lot of carrier stuff. Much of it is indigestible and may tend to Heat. However for this to happen there must be an inherent ST condition to begin with, whihc is to say a LV Aggressor in the wings. Otr a Yangming type situation involving Heat and occsionally Fire, say caid reflux, a hernia, Dry constipation, dry skin et al. Drowsy si almost certainly a SP Def precondition and nay food intake will typically cause Blood and Qi to recede from digestion and cause sleepiness, ot more typicall " I wanna lie down for a minuit " . Vitamins in 5 E parlance, if taken more than they should, are just this side of External Pathogens. Syptoms they will precipitate will be Excess and Heat based. Over time if not dealt with this can internalize. Holmes. hollylac wrote: > > A patient yesterday told me that she has a difficult time taking > multi vitamins. They make her very drowsy.
