Hi,

Can someone answer the following question in simple words

for a layperson.

My client and I have been searching for an answer and have got

zero response from other health practitioners.

I will forward the response to Dale. Also, I am looking for a

referral in Orma West Virgina.

Dale is a 50 year old male, who has had kidney stones since he

was 14. He has constant back pain, bloating, vomiting and

problems when he urninates. Everytime the doctor changes his

diet or medicine, the kidney stones change. He has had every

type of stone possible. The doctors have tried to crush the

stones, which almost ruptured the kidney. He has had one

stone removed by cutting into the right kidney and he has had

over 100 systoscopies. The doctors give him pain pills but they

do not help very much anymore. We are looking for other

possible answers to stop the pain and kidney stones. Can you

help?

Thanks

Wayne McDonald

Dear Wayne,

I have had quite consistent result with using a Planetary formulas blend. It is

a mixture of turmeric root, gravel root, dandelion root, ginger root, lemon balm

leaf, marshmallow root, parsley root and licorice. Not only has symptoms

resolved but also the crystals have cleared on urinalysis. As these cases often

have low grade chronic urinary tact infections I often add Buchu and Bearberry.

It is also important to work with the diet as you point out. Even though the

stones are changing, usually there is a prominent component, focusing the

control measures on these one or two usually works. It is important that the

stones are analysed spectrographically so that the percentages of the various

mineral components and the organic matrix can be given. Each type has a

preferred urinary tact environment for some this is the pH of the urine. Dietary

management of urolithiasis is complex but resolves around manipulation the

Calcium + Phosphate density in the diet as well as phytonutrients such as

removing sources of oxalic acid, similarly the addition of omega 3 PUFA's acts

to lower intraglomerular pressure which changes renal function and can be

helpful, also consider the drinking water, if you are in a hard water area it

has high calcium levels, as does much bottled water. Urolithiasis is the result

of oversaturation of the urine so drinking lots of water is essential.

Whilst it is impossible to condense 36 years of medical history into a few

lines, soyou may have already covered this but It is always worth going back to

basics. Please except my apologies for stating the obvious but neither in TCM

nor western medicine is Urinary stones a diagnosis, the underlying disease

process and triggers need to be elucidated.

yours

IMO, the most important part of preventing calculi is to ensure high

flushing of the KI/urinary tract by drinking lots of fluid.

One can use combinations of water, barley-water, fruit juice, low-alcohol

beer to a total of >2 litres/day.

Zexie-Alisma orientalis helps to prevent formation of oxalate calculi

Star Fruit (Carambola): cold, sweet & sour, (ST, KI & BL) clears Heat,

produces fluids, promotes urination (treats Stone Lin), detoxifies

Kampo formula TJ-40 (Chorei-to; Zhuling Tang) is used for Stone Lin

also.

http://www.iama.edu/Herbs/Formulas/ui-821.htm says:

Xiao Yan UI-821 is a traditional formula for urinary infection. Clinically

this formula has the effects of relieving inflammation and pain, and

allaying fever. The herbs in this formula promote urination and unblock

painful urinary dysfunction. Ingredients, Polygoni Avicularis Herba and

Gardeniae Fructus have shown an inhibitory effect against many

pathogenic fungi. For >800 years, this formula has been used to treat

acute urethritis, cystitis, pyelitis or other infection in urinary system.

Indications: Acute urethritis, cystitis, pyelitis, prostatitis or other

infections in the urinary system, urinary tract calculi.

Dosage: 4-6 tablets three times per day, after meals.

Ingredients:

Dianthi Herba-Qu Mai

Akebiae Caulis-Mu Tong

Polygoni Avicularis Herba-Bian Xu

Plantaginis Semen-Che Qian Zi

Talcum & Kaolinum-Hua Shi

Junci Caulis Medulla-Teng Xin Cao

Gardeniae Fructus-Zhi Zi

Rhei Rhizoma- Da Huang

Glycyrrhizae Radix-Gan Cao

http://tinyurl.com/5lt6u says: The dietary advice for recurrent urinary

calculi includes:

1. Drink at least 2 L of water every day, or more if there is increased

fluid loss: this is the most important step.

2. Minimise consumption of foods that contain oxalate or uric acid.

Foods that contain oxalate include:

• chocolate • coffee • cola drinks • rhubarb • tea

3. Avoid milk in tea—calcium precipitates oxalate. Foods that contain

uric acid include: • beer • red wine • red meat • organ meats

4. Avoid processed meats, organ meats (e.g. brain, kidney, liver,

sweetbread), yeast spreads and other high salt foods. Restrict salt

intake.

5. Reduce animal protein consumption: restriction to one major meat

meal a day (includes chicken and fish).

6. Add citrate-containing fruit juices to the diet, including grapefruit,

apple and orange juice.

7. Eat a healthy diet of vegetables and fruit with a high fibre content
