Hi Thomas and Anita,

Thanks for the great ideas---I will definitely use both of your ideas.

Regarding the Dang Gui and black chicken: is that a formula? Of

course, I know about Dang Gui, but I'm not sure what you are referring

to when you say " black chicken " ?

Thanks!

Some Chinese formulas have Wuji (Black Chicken/Hen; Wu=black;

Ji=fowl, as in Jineijin-Chicken Gizzard Lining).

Also, home-made soup with Wuji and Danggui is a DIY tonic. See:

Phil:

In Guangzhou markets, one has a choice between

purchasing a regular chicken (often live, kept in

cages in the market).

Or one may choose a black chicken. I don't know

whether this is a natural skin color, or a technique

devised to change the skin, but the skin of these

chickens is black.

Perhaps this is what is meant by " black chicken? "

Yes, the photos show black skin - I reckon artificial, or charred, but I am

not sure.

See http://www.geocities.com/dawnlittle/recipes/blackchixsoup.pdf

Hi Laura,

I was referring to the product called Essence of Chicken with Tangkwei

(Dang Gui) which is a famous formula for the treatment of postpartum

blood deficiency and qi weakness, also supposed to tone the uterus and

muscles and promote transformation of blood into mothers milk.

It has Dang Gui, Dang Shen, Chuan Xiong, Bai Shao, Bai Zhu, Fu Ling,

Shu Di, Gan Cao plus black boned chicken, which is especially bred for

its ability to treat blood deficiency and kidney xu. This formula is

also excellent for those who need significant convalescent support ie

cancer or other severe illness.

The main problem with it though, is most people in a debilitated state

have a good deal of digestive weakness and as the formula is very rich

(It comes as a liquid in jars) tend to not tolerate it straight,

This can be alleviated through diluting it with warm water and sipping

it like a broth, or strong ginger tea being added or taken after eating.

Best Wishes

Anita
